  • The best part is that inference cost goes up with usage. Not like normal software where big effort pays off with every additional sale. Training doesn’t last long before it’s revisited.

  • Having a local caching DNS server (unbound) makes a big difference in perceived speed. Putting pihole in front of that is even bigger. At least for me.

I don’t stream and I don’t have 2 or 3 people making video calls. So it’s fine that I’m not on 1gbps. But with a couple teenagers and adults streaming and working it adds up.

  • Leant how to solve problems with if, else if, else and for and while, and you can do a ton of stuff. Learn how to work with objects and APIs and you’ve got the basics for any language. You will always need to learn syntax, convention, and secure practices, but the fundamentals don’t change.

  • “Please stop making your competitive product better, whilst we go through the IPO process.”

  • Absolutely not. ICE vehicles need fluid changes. Arguably more frequently than non-hybrid if they’re not run often as the oil will get contaminated with water.

  • The battery is a spectre I’m not looking forward to.

The GTI is a car; the RAV4 is an appliance. Hopefully you can keep it around for a while. The imperfections of mechanical, combustion driven cars are feedback that make the driving experience pleasurable. But with the level of traffic in my neighborhood and fuel prices, I just want to get there cheaply most days.

  • Yes. Even though Toyota hybrids are really efficient and low maintenance, with EVs you just plug in when you get home. No fuel. No oil changes. It’s like a toaster; it just works. My EV drivetrain has something like 5 moving parts.

After 150,000km or so you need to have the coolant and gearcase fluids changed, and brake fluid flushed based on age.

As long as manufacturers are building the electronic parts to last a reasonable time (and that I expect to change to serve the dealer networks) it’s much less work owning an EV.

  • And we think beef is expensive now!

  • There was a time not so long ago that this would have been meat and exciting to me because of all the potential for accessibility and my shitty memory and…

But the enshittification of everything has destroyed my positivity about tech. And also, Meta/Facebook sucked before then.

  • Offer services for discounted rate and throw in some consulting.

After 3 years, contract renewal goes up 50% and no services deal.

All the enterprise tech companies are doing this.

  • Farming.

  • With a 1:1 usage:cost relationship, how else could this be priced? Other than to take the 90th percentile usage and peg pricing there - which would just have subscriptions cancelled outright.

  • Not even close to most uncomfortable.

  • Oh, I see the problem. He’s using facts, analysis, and mathematics to make up his mind, instead of jumping on the hype train.

  • Yes, I hate mosquitoes, but they’re a pretty significant part of the ecosystem. But Google is well known for their measured and thoughtful approach, and especially long-term planning, so I’m sure it’s going to be just fine.

  • Everyone over 60 in my lineage seems to have cataracts. So… later.

  • PRK still has the risk of halos in night vision and I’ve got my astigmatism correction pretty well dialled in with glasses so I was worried about that.

  • LASIK has a too-high complication rate (2% I think) and permanent corneal flap, so I shied away from it. Also, it’s offered by exactly one company pretending to be three in my area.

I won’t be able to take advantage of this given my age but I’m hoping it turns out!

    That and tooth regeneration.
