  • It is unlikely that you will agree on everything. Given enough time, a bit of stress, and some sleep deprivation, it’s inevitable that a disagreement will occur.

The “all relationships have fights” idea is rooted in the idea that total lack of disagreement can point to a communication problem, that is, spouses don’t share their opinion and feelings fully, which leads to a longer term resentment and long term problems.

  • There’s a lot of value to teaching kids the value of their time - and how little they get for it.

The “worked harder in school because of manual labour” didn’t work for me though.

  • The article isn’t about child labour specifically, but part time jobs for teens. Technically, child labour, but not really the same as a 8 year old coal miner or loom operator. Good click bait!

I worked through my teens but with some important caveats. I worked next to my boss every day, and they started before me and finished after me. I worked outdoors, in relatively decent weather. I was able to take vacation as I desired - even though I only had a few weeks to work, I still was able to take 2 weeks of vacation.

I don’t think my kids will be able to have a similar experience (given my location and market forces), and I don’t want them to grind away their leisure time at minimum wage working in a shitty retail environment with unpredictable hours. When I was working, (50-60hrs a week for the summer) the sum total of my all my teen years up to university didn’t cover the first year’s rent. I hope that I’ll be able to find suitable activities, volunteer opportunities, and learning experiences that they can participate in instead of a job.

  • Yeah, I just don’t have the time or interest to spend weekends messing around with the device I need to stay in touch with work and family. It’s just not worth it. De-googling android is just way too much work.

The majority of the android base are dirt cheap phones in third world countries serving as data collection and advertising platforms to communities that can’t afford anything else.

  • Also you are the product from data collection, the device's planned obsolescence/inability to be repaired, surcharges for in-iOS transactions, and so on, but I guess that's not the exact framework of this question.

    Better. Than. Android.

But the margins are obscene for sure.

  • A) if you trust your ISP less than you trust the VPN provider. Think about that for a bit, because there’s a lot of marketing from VPN providers about how they protect privacy, but how much of it is true? Most browsing data is encrypted today anyways. B) you want to pretend you’re in another country for licensing reasons. C) you travel to places where you don’t trust your ISP and/or use free wifi.

  • Buying protein in bulk saves a lot over the supplement store.

I buy iPhones. I’m not sure they’re overpriced but they sure are pricey.

  • If the eurozone could get rid of all their currencies, they can shelve their independent internal payment systems and standardize on one.

  • One reason that’s in favour is that people who cannot WFH benefit because there’s fewer people clogging up the commute. I always bring this up with people who say “must be nice but I can’t build a house/save patients/etc. from home”. Some people like that feel that because they need to be somewhere, office dwellers should too. But it actively makes their life more difficult!

  • There is a reason that cloud services are popular with businesses. How does self-hosting this provide value to your customers in line with the time that you spend on IT tasks instead of your product? Do you have enough faith in your build that it will be secure and reliable? If you have downtime, does your business have flexibility to accommodate you doing IT work for hours without loss of revenue? If you go on vacation, who is on call?

I’m not saying you shouldn’t, but do consider the time investment and risks. There are alternatives to M365 and Google.

  • A financial advisor you pay is working for you

One who is “free” is a salesperson.

There’s good and bad advisors on both sides, but it’s important to know. There’s people out there paying over 5% management fees.

  • A guy with good grades was accepted into a prestigious architectural school.

He works for a local brewery now.

  • Pfsense is shady on the OSS side these days. I think. I haven’t gotten into the drama. Opnsense is a popular fork.

  • Vegetable oils for cooking are oxidizing but will oxidize slowly, like raw linseed or tung oil. It may have a slight odour as it may go rancid, though probably not significant. Mineral oil is a different kind of oil with a different purpose and won’t harden.

  • Yes. If there’s another open source project that has the coverage I’m not aware of it.

  • The venn diagram of anti vaccine and anti fluoride people is damn near a circle in my experience so my gut says put the fluoride in.
