  • Slop-ish content. Cool collection. I try not to own books I haven’t read, though my unread pile is growing.

  • For a while there, there was a perception that Satya was trying to move away from that.

Then they started firing people, cutting the sales budget, running licensing audits, and churning out trash and its 100% back to business as usual.

I remember the “this is my office” stickers the MS people had, when they were pushing the EMS. Now they’re required to be on site. Hmmm

  • A renewed interest in competing with Chromebooks?

Can’t complain. My kids need to use something beyond my 8 year old Surface.

  • I’d say coffee, because I have a low level dependency on morning caffeine and high level emotional dependence. I’d say alcohol, because I tend to binge drink weekends.

But really, it’s my smartphone. I can cut alcohol and caffeine out easily, but I can’t lose the smartphone, which means it’s always there ready for me to dissociate.

  • They’re within their rights and it’s definitely not something they want to have take off, whether it’s accurate or not.

But apparently their brand management doesn’t know who Barbara Streisand is.

  • cheap, reliable CVT

I may be out of date but Nissan’s CVTs self destruct very effectively and Subaru’s don’t handle the torque of the H6 so well. They’re still unpleasant to drive. Give me an EV every day.

  • I have one of their devices with an intel CPU. I didn’t even boot the OS. Just popped in the firmware and told it to boot proxmox. But it’s an i5 with 32GB RAM so a different scenario than you’re thinking of. Im still bitter about waiting for Black Friday to upgrade the RAM and paying double.

It’s LPDDR, I think that’s not upgradable, and not a lot.

  • I’ve heard that dosages are way higher than necessary. Body builders are using gray market product with approaching 1/2 the dosage and seeing good results I think I remember someone saying.

  • If they didn’t have AI to blame, they’d call this a pivot (and the subtext would be they’re running out of funding). It’s not about AI.

  • The new Leaf is supposed to be pretty good, as far as appliance oriented transportation is concerned. VW has been putting out decent cars too for a while. Both these manufacturers fundamentally understand how to put a car together which puts them ahead of Tesla. I’m wary of Toyota and Honda offerings as they’ve spent a fair bit of time avoiding them. USA big 3 make some compliance cars, which are appliance grade but I’d only consider them if they’re dirt cheap.

Up-market, Volvo and Polestar are putting out some interesting cars, and if I had USD200k I could only use on a car, it would be a Lucid - politics aside, I think they’re doing some great engineering. BMW and Mercedes’s offerings are not inspiring, but Audi has some interesting stuff they share to some extent with VW.

The up front costs of car + solar are not negligible, but the operating costs are dirt cheap. I spend less on my payment than I used to spend on gas.

  • HIPAA governs how the data is held, but individuals can consent to sharing. Even with OpenAI.

  • Most of the influencers are beholden to the marketing teams of the products they receive for free to review.

Independent evaluations cost money. When people say “Acme corp sent me this widget for free but it’s entirely my opinion” it’s a sponsored post by definition. If they raise negative points, it’s good, but they risk their future freebies.

It’s old. Back when Apple Keynotes were about new stuff instead of recycled Android features, if you were negative about Apple products, you’re cut from the product releases. Car magazines were the same way. Some had good income and didn’t hesitate to roast cars; others just regurgitate the press release so they can still attend the events.

  • Good idea.

What is the fuel/emissions cost of a bus stop? That is, braking and resuming speed.

  • Came here to say this. It’s homey though.

  • When Ramparts broke the story in 1967, Steinem confirmed her role to The New York Times without apology, describing the CIA as “liberal, nonviolent and honorable” and stating she would do it again.

  • Huge tyres? Or huge rims.

Skinny tires on huge rims and a lift kit will self destruct pretty quickly. Pavement princess trucks are considerably less capable, ironically.

  • The forces on your suspension can be tremendous. Repeated impacts cause faster wear. Large impacts can cause immediate damage and/or loss of control. The popularity of large wheels means the capacity of the tyres to absorb an impact is reduced, and even with larger sidewalks, tyres can be damaged by impacting a sharp edge. A single OEM rim can cost over $1000; a suspension repair is probably in the same cost range. At this time of year in frosty countries with failing infrastructure, manholes aren’t typically even close to level with the road surface and may be a significant road hazard.

Jeeps have the handling characteristics of a jeep, and hitting bumps in them is uncomfortable. “Off road capabilities” is not the same as Baja.

  • What a dummy.

  • A cheerful chirpy yes-we-can attitude is the last thing my inbox needs.
