In the fediverse since 2017. I mostly talk sports. If something on the internet doesn't spark joy, mute it.

Do not yell at me simply because I am in front of you and the people responsible for the problems are not. It is extremely unpleasant.

  • This is a lot of words to say "I've never heard of http 202"

  • I made a super slimy batch one time when I got interrupted for about ten minutes after I blended the oats but before I strained the oat milk. But I will warn you, I found the resulting product pretty undrinkable.

  • I made a Cara Cara simple this spring that I mix in and it is awesome. I squeezed three Cara Caras and simmered the juice, the rinds, a cup of water and a cup of sugar for about 30 minutes, then I add a bit to my oat milk cold brew lattes for a lil citrusy splash.

  • I make my own cold brew concentrate and oat milk, and then use the oat milk in place of a third or so of the water. It doesn't really end up watery, and you can adjust the flavor by tinkering with the oat milk recipe. I prefer it to dairy milk because it is cheaper, lasts longer in the fridge, and causes less suffering to dairy cows (I still consume dairy, I just substitute when possible).

  • There are some users who seem to be here to collect as many downvotes as possible, and I do not understand it at all. You can’t turn in downvotes for prizes? They don’t have market value?

  • There is no "age verification" possible, only identity verification that reveals your age. Once OSes have kill switches installed that operate based on your identity, it's a pretty straight line to enforcing that only the "right people" have access to computers.

  • How can I live a life that is truly Good? A life that, at it's end, I can look back on and say that I left the world, on net, a better place?

  • For this very reason, I get the same vibes from a link to or screenshot of llm output as I did from links to lmgtfy ("let me google that for you") back in the day -- it's a slightly more polite way of saying "go fuck yourself:"

Awhile back Hidde De Vries identified a pain point around LLM-usage in standards work which leads to something I call an asymmetry of thought. In a conversation where one person is a domain expert and one person is copy-pasting ChatGPT responses, it creates an imbalance of effort in the discussion. A second-hand burdening, like Brandolini’s Law, where debunking inaccuracies and subtly-wrongs takes more effort than creating the inaccuracies. We are, in effect, taxing experts to do quality assurance on the model’s responses. When that work is unpaid I believe this is immoral… or at least it’s a breach in social etiquette.

  • This is, of course, a reference to the famous "Haircut Lapinski," the great granddaughter of Tara Lipinski, who got their name after attempting to give herself bangs with an ice skate blade after a particularly devastating breakup. She was notorious for being jumpy when she was called to "land on a fraction," or landing an ice skating jump that was not a full number of rotations, since it required a change of direction and a fair amount of ankle strength, which she never quite learned to trust again after a horrific malleolar fracture.

(this is all bs and I made it all up so please don't critique my lack of ice skating knowledge too harshly)

  • I definitely opened this thread with the expectation that there'd be an unhinged horny comment from you about all this, but it's just... informative historical facts? With interesting and relevant commentary? It's good reading but I just... I'm just not sure I'm ready for serious violet08.

  • Gas Town is AI madness to the nth degree. Announcing a v1.0 release on a 3 month old project that has been in maintenance mode for a month is truly unhinged behavior:

It’s safe to say that Gas Town has largely been in maintenance mode since the Dolt migration finished up, and that was well over a month ago. I’ve continued to allow a few nice features here and there, but for the most part we are now directing people’s creative efforts to the successor, Gas City, which is in alpha testing and on track for a fast GA.

  • A needlessly aggressive response that is clearly grounded in a pretty fundamental misunderstanding of both the source material and also your comment.

  • Maybe we should let llms worship spiralism? at least then you'd be able to identify llm output reliably.

  • If you thought muricans were gonna get mad because you accused us of smushing a bunch of European countries’ cuisines together to produce something new, you have fundamentally misunderstood our national character and cuisine.

  • Seriously, just block them. It’s not a punishment, it’s a curation tool; you’re allowed to block people who haven’t done anything wrong just because you don’t want to see their content. If you don’t like women’s sports, block me! It’s fine — you should have the social media experience you want, and you can use the block button to get it.

  • Moderation. We had a big influx of users with the Reddit api drama that created a bunch of communities, and then all returned to Reddit shortly thereafter, leaving most of the big communities largely unmoderated. The threadiverse isn’t going to become less toxic until new moderators step in and clean up the worst of it.

  • Does he know he can just call a press conference basically whenever as HHS secretary? Cabinet members don’t have to launch podcasts, they can just say stuff over a podium and actual professionals will make a bunch of podcasts for them out of the audio.
