  • I was thinking OP could give everyone their own VM to use as a workstation so they could access the files on the server easily, and/or run programs based on their work. When their coworkers leave, OP can easily destroy the VM and the resources would be automatically reallocated (depending on the servers configuration). With a physical device, the storage on that device is only allocated to that device and can't be shared when it's not in use

    Me, personally? I have multiple VMs for different contexts: my teaching job (super clean, video sharing tools, presentation tools), gaming, media server (has scripts to download stuff off of YouTube), server management (just a regular Debian install), and a fuck around box (I just use it to try new OSs like Fedora, or try breaking OSs like deleting the system32 folder on windows)

  • I know this isn't exactly what you're asking for, but I'd recommend also looking into a VM OS such as proxmox or unraid (I'm running unraid)

    They'll let you create/destroy VM instances you can access remotely. So in theory, you can give everyone their own VM to use and access the files on the server.

    However, unraid / proxmox may have performance issues running in a VM on a Mac mini...

  • This is why I'm not going to buy RAM / Dodge / Chrysler/ Jeep / anything Stellantis owns, and this is why I'm not buying any new car with "smart" / "built-in" junk.

    I don't know of any car that has an actually good head unit. Its either garbage because its a giant touch screen, making it super difficult to navigate without looking (that's why all the controls in an airplane are different shapes and sizes), or its just a hub for you to run Android Auto / apples equivalent.

  • As much as I want to see Lemmy and the rest of the fediverse flourish; at the same time, I hope it doesn't.

    Once the fediverse becomes popular and gains main-stream attention, the billionaires and political twats will flock towards it and try to monetize it; Morons will flood the fediverse with memes and AI slop worse than !lemmyshitpost@lemmy.world (you know what you've done); corporations will start spamming ads for their shitty products; and scammers will start setting up bot nets to coerce users into sending them money to their new AI waifus.

    The unbearable weight of all the garbage entering and attacking the fediverse will drive moderators out the door, leaving servers as wastelands of junk. No longer interesting, no longer human. Just trash, like how Reddit, Facebook, Instagram, etc... are today.

    So yes, I'll welcome friends and family into the fediverse with open arms. But I really hope we don't start getting too many shout outs

  • It's a comic about not being able to sleep, so I checked what time it was posted at. They posted it at ~5am which is a time people are usually asleep. So it checks out that OP posted the comic when they were presumably having trouble falling asleep. Bbuutt im calling myself out in assuming that no one lives in another time zone. There is/was a running joke that people think other time zones don't exist

  • Looking through the docs n' stuff, this is what I found:

    I wasn't able to find any additional instructions on how to update other than the expected generic steps (docker pull or pip install -r requirements.txt). So my guess at this point is that they have scripts built in to check the version and run upgrade scripts as needed

  • I haven't gone through your specific case, but generally what I do when doing a major update with potentially breaking changes:

    • Read the upgrade guides, if they have them. Some devs will put them out if they know their users will encounter issues when upgrading. If they don't have an upgrade guide, there might be some in the change logs. Going from 1.17.1 to (assuming) 2.x.y, check the change logs at 2.0.0.
    • Backup everything. I'd recommend doing this on a regular basis anyway.
    • (If you're running it in a docker container) Setup a second instance, restore the backup, then run the upgrade. You'll be able to check to see if it breaks at all. If it works, you can just destroy the old one and use the new one
    • (if you're not running it in a container) with the backup, try upgrading. If it breaks, you should be able to uninstall & reinstall the old version, then restore the backup

  • As an educator myself, I agree with all of the points they mentioned in the article. I'm seeing the affects right now of students who have over-used AI, that are losing the ability to critically think, and inability to create well-structured essays. I'm not a proficient writer by any means (my course is a research course so the focus is on the research, not on the writing itself), but students have submitted essays with paragraphs of absolute nonsense. It's strange - sometimes paragraphs will initially seem like it's making a point, but won't end up actually making it.

    As much as I hate the slop that comes across my desk now, this is the world we live in today. I've tried boycotting it, but it doesn't work; Students will use AI anyway. The worst part is that sometimes it'll clearly be AI, but I don't have any tools to prove it. I can't prove it, so they just lose marks on shit writing.

    Instead of trying to fight against new tech, I think this is one of those things where we need to teach how and when to appropriately use AI; and restructure courses to enforce the new teaching methods. There is a time and place for LLMs; but it's a slow process to readjust courses for it.

    • Don't go to bed with the same clothes you wore during the day. The perspiration will make you really cold at night
    • Even though it's warm during the day, don't assume it'll be warm at night. The temp differences can be quite drastic
    • pack your clothes for the next day in your sleeping bag so they're warm in the morning. I usually either roll them up and use them as a pillow, or put them deep inside my sleeping bag by my feet.
