  • Actually, they did cut open the reactor building. CANDU is a unique type of nuclear reactor in that it uses unenriched natural uranium. It uses a heavy water loop, which is heated by the reactor core (heavy water acts as the moderator). The heat from the heavy water loop is transferred to a light water loop in a steam generator. The generated steam is sent to another building where a turbine turns it into electricity. They replaced those steam generators, which are housed in the reactor building.

  • Touch Bar works, but can be a bit finicky. For example, it might work properly after reboot. Put the Mac to sleep, and after wake the Touch Bar has lost part of its functionality.

    There's a new yet-to-be-released project that significantly improves the Touch Bar experience. It lets you display basically anything you want on the Touch Bar. System monitor, weather widgets, games, etc. It even has support for application specific controls. They might publicly release it within the next few days.

  • Just a quick heads up for those planning on installing Linux on their Mac. There are about three types of Macs: Intel Macs, T2 Macs and Apple Silicon Macs.

    • Linux should work fine on Intel Macs, but some people at least seem to have problems with the Touch Bar.
    • T2 Macs are a flavor of Intel Macs. If your Mac has T2 chip, you must use T2Linux flavor of your distro. The overall experience might not be perfectly smooth, expect some issues with at least Touch Bar, suspend and connectivity. Some fixes should arrive later this year, as far as I know.
    • Asahi Linux currently supports M1 and M2 Macs. M3 and M4 are unsupported.

  • If it's T2 Mac, you should use T2Linux. If it's a non-T2 TouchBar Mac... Maybe something in the T2Linux wiki helps? At least on T2 Macs, certain modules needs to be loaded in specific order, or the TB won't work.

  • Just because one option is better than another, doesn't mean it's good.

    OS level age check applies to everyone, not just children. Some legislations require strong age checking, which means you need to send some identification to some service. You won't be able to know how the information is handled, for how long it's stored and for what purposes it's used beside age checking. And because this applies to everyone, and is required to be able to use your computer, everything you do with your computer and phone is tied to your user account, and as such to you as an individual and identifiable human being.

    Some of these legislations uses age ranges, and the OS is required to inform applications, and such, whether the user is, for example, below 13 years old, or 13 to 16 years old, etc. Consider this simple scenario: Some user uses some application, and the OS reports the user's age as below 13. The user uses the same app the next day, but now the OS reports the user's age as 13 to 16 years old. Can you figure out the user's exact birthday and age? If that application is part of some kind of larger network of advertisers and whatnots, they will now forever know the user's exact age without the OS reporting anything else.

    These can also be used to make some software illegal, especially free and open source software. If you can replace Windows with Linux, Photoshop with Gimp, etc. it hurts the bottom line of those companies. Those companies can't prevent you from using the open source alternative, but it would be in their interest if those pieces of software becomes illegal to use and distribute. If age checking functionality is added to some open source software, the age checking can simply be removed by the user. You only need to correctly form the age checking law and that entire software is now illegal, and must be removed from the internet.

    While the intention of these laws might to be to protect children, they cause too much harm for little good. The age checking can be circumvented in some situations, meaning the children aren't protected. And the entire thing is a huge privacy mess (data leaks, etc.) for every single computer user.

Safe Mode is intended for exactly this kind of situation, but Microslop in their infinite wisdom has made getting into it as convoluted as possible.     This problem doesn't in any way affect your ability to boot from USB. If your PC for some reason can't boot from USB, it's a separate issue. Can you enter Boot Menu? UEFI Setup? Do you get any error messages when you try to boot from USB?

  • Most likely just a software issue. Try booting Windows into Safe Mode. If it works, try rebooting normally and see if the problem was magically fixed.
