  • I have a J2 SDK installed on my PC right now, in case I get around to programming for my Nokia 3410

The full name is J2ME (Java 2 Mobile Environment) but "J2" is valid because Java 2 is part of it (duh). It's surprisingly high-level for a phone with a 96x65 B/W screen (6K pixels - not width, area) and like 1 MB of storage and 512 kB of RAM. The pixel buffer is 24bit RGB, PNGs and GIFs can be rendered into it and they get dithered by the runtime. There's model-specific syscalls to take advantage of its 3D library, which only one commercial game, Munkiki's Castles, ended up using. On 2 out of 3 phones I own, it was offered for free by Czech provider Eurotel to advertise the capabilities of CSD (early 2G dial-up data service, but still supported by some Czech providers; the Nokia is still able to emulate several analog modem standards in case the path between the BTS and WAP gateway was not fully digital and lossless) and downloaded by the previous user. The 3410 was indeed a high-end model in 2001.

  • A werewolf is part human, part wolf, so a werehouse would be part human, part house.

  • It's not 🌙 wolf / 🌕 werewolf. Unless there's a different kind werewolves I don't know about.

  • I was expecting that they would find too few degrees of separation from Epstein

  • USB host devices are cheap and easy to come across. You can use a crap old PC with a fresh OS install, then wipe it. Or an old phone with microUSB OTG. Or a DVD player if you only need the file list (those can usually only open JPGs, GIFs, MP3s, and MPGs or AVIs with one of the video codecs allowed on VCDs/DVDs). Even some microcontrollers will have USB host capabilities and software libraries that will let you get the file list or contents slowly over serial.

If you're worried about "killer USBs" (data line zappers), open it and check for capacitors (and antennas in case they use Find My or LoRa for exfiltration but that would be super unlikely). Generating overvoltage inside normal-looking chips is technically possible with charge pumps and embedded capacitors but very expensive to pull off.

  • Unfortunately, copyright is purposefully designed so that most works going into the public domain are irrelevant by then and nobody's willing to convert them.

  • Not a genius. This thing is called a monogram, the most basic logo design. Used mostly by couples, law firms and couples' law firms.

  • You're right, at that size the AI is not very concerning either.

  • Do your and your partner's names both start with L?

  • Thanks, those give me ideas for making more operator logos like these (No AI but mostly CC0 (public domain) because my creative input is questionable, some are just tracing of scaled-down images with a few touch-ups; I'm not too concerned about sharing non-FOSS trademarks under a permissive licence at such low res)

  • In that way, yes, but the logos that feature small text (Groovy, Lua) didn't turn out well at all.

  • Here's the list of logos row by row so you don't have to awkwardly ask what they are

  • What is the "LL" monogram in the second one? I crudely recreated it to reverse-image-search but got no results.

  • You'll satisfy the teacher as often as possible and get good grades. I want to feel right as often as possible, which means I'll disrupt the class often and get called out during the parents-teachers meeting.

  • Did you look closely at Jellyfin? The things in the dark are OK, they add flavor, which was an artistic choice − the problem is unrealistic silhouettes of people & animals in one mosaic piece. Also, it's rotated on the laptop, and so is Debian.

The hand and face (bottom right) on Gimp is way more awful.

  • Looking closely at Perl, it seems there are photorealistic (hard to tell if AI) photos toned blue, abstract shapes that might be edited/vectorized photos, and in the bottom right there's a bead necklace that's so unshapely it's an AI giveaway. Well spotted, it was indeed made using AI-generated images!
