  • Don't forget the slight dismay some podcasters will have till they slowly start to rationalize and walk it back. I'll admit it's more fun watching the mind fuck in real time with narration.

  • I've found the Lowe's site/app is even worse, you can sort by cost but it will "categorize" them so it shows the more expensive items first then lists the next set in cost order. I would rather just not have the option.

  • are you referring to this statement?

Originally I got the tag FX-ISL-4 off of the MoBo but couldn’t find specs so with CPU-X it pulled up a HP 8350 (1) MoBo that I could get specs from (am I missing the 8350 on the board or is cpu-x style programs the only way to get the info?)

sorry for the confusion, that was more just a side question on why the listing on the mobo itself and the hardware recognition software give different data to look up and wasn't really the main point of the post. The links in that statement on my original post show the specifications for the mobo but there's conflicting information as I replied to another commenter with.

  • I guess it's perspective, a 10% increase seems like a mighty fine improvement to me especially when you're on the precipice of a bottleneck on older equipment.

Honestly it's a few factors including the price, for example:

that's almost a 20% price increase for an upgrade which might not be compatible and downgraded speed wise. As I stated before it's also just a knowledge lesson as well in knowing all the components and compatibility which I'm interested in.

  • I'm actually in a state of confusion over the fediverse, reddit, and social media as a whole atm. I loved switching over to Lemmy because of the foss/decentralizing and lower user count at first. If I see a thread with 1500 comments I'm less likely to interact with it, like trying to hold a meaningful conversation at a concert event.

Forums and articles are slowing becoming harder to find for information without going through 6 AI pages repeating the same paragraph in 20 different ways without really telling you anything new, so that's slowly becoming more of a burden. Reddit is so inundated with mainstream now that even a specific trade community just has terrible trash comments that get upvoted and can even drown out a professionals real informational response (like youtube does a lot) but ... at least it's there I suppose.

Lemmy... well yes this space is "nerdy", but there's very few specific nerds. by that I mean like the true nerd definition of someone so into this one niche thing that they completely lose all touch with social ques because their area came up in conversation and they are salivating to talk about it. I just recently got told in the most popular pc build community here that they never really bothered looking at memory speed.... I was flabbergasted.

so idk what I would like to see Lemmy become or the future of these types of sites in general. I forced myself to make that post on the pc build community because I was going through the process and maybe it would help someone out in the future and a little socializing while going through a project seems interesting. But, I have so many other posts I think about and just don't do because it's going to be either generic responses or me talking into the void with putting a lot of work into collecting all the data I have and formatting it/etc. Time is always limited, so it's a battle over priorities and responsibilities.

  • Thanks for the official cpu link, it's annoying how buried some of those pages are and usually end up on a consumer site for the information.

Already upgraded to SSD, tend to always do that first and reserve all the spare HDD's for network back-up use (I honestly see very little difference in the drive types besides boot-up and maybe some specific tasks like transfers but it's everyone's bread and butter for upgrades so I just go with it).

Looking at several different CPU's for a couple of devices I have so it's been added to the list (who knew ebay was the best place for prices on cpu's?, just gotta vet the vendor a bit more before sending the funds I suppose). I'm actually quite pleased with the cpu for now with this use case, a particular game that prefers smaller core count with higher frequency and a lot of websurfing (they're also a tab fiend, it's horrible). Not including ones with overclocking it's one of the best "older cpus" I've got so far. I have a long list of testing I plan on doing this winter and will probably borrow it back for a bit to throw it in the lot and see what's bottlenecking for curiosity sake at the minimum.

Ok, here's my current problem/confusion that's not making any sense.

    Supported:

    CPU: 64 GB DDR4-2133/2400, DDR3L-1333/1600 @ 1.35V (Memory Channels: 2)

Chipset: DIMMs per channel 1, ECC Memory: NO

MotherBoard: Supports up to PC4-21300 (DDR4 2666), Supports 4 GB and 8 GB DDR4 UDIMMs (Dual/2 channel memory architecture)

So the CPU limits the ddr4 to 2400 instead of the 2666 the Mobo can handle (might get 2666 incase the cpu does get switched out). The mobo limits the 64GB ram cpu max because it only supports 8gb with 2 channels (only 1 dimm per channel) meaning max 16gb? dmidecode lists in Physical Memory Array, Maximum Capacity: 32 GB. Is that per channel? I'm assuming it's not and is a total since the memory sites also want to sell a 32GB kit with 2 - 16GB sticks. Why is intel, like apple I ran into before, limiting the specifications on their hardware datasheet's when you can actually use more? Which should I consider a true indicator and which is misinformation? The retailers for hardware of course have an incentive to sell a more expensive product but the manufacturers are not promoting the full available specs because... I have no clue.

I get this is getting closer to the sillier and pedantic side now for an older machine, again I just want to be confident in my knowledge and have full considerations available to me when making a decision even if I'm not min-maxing the device.

  • idk, I have devices ranging from ddr to ddr5 and I see performance changes everytime I upgrade ram. How do you build a PC without looking at memory speeds?!

  • I don't think I've ever ran into a motherboard that listed ratings for memory on the board itself, just component labeling. Is that a newer type of printing for more powerful boards I haven't ran into yet?

Bios lists what is current, unfortunately the chipset and cpu doesn't allow for memory overclocking so no xmp available if those are suppose to show me the different settings.

This reply did get me into the dmidecode command because I was trying to research if I was missing something and saw some uploaded reports for it. No clue why I hadn't ran into that little helpful ass tool before in all my troubleshooting (just kept using 3rd party programs I had to download for the info).

  • At this point I think you can legally opt out of any type of data collection by the government like the Census. You're required by law to participate but they are also required by law to keep your information safe, that's no longer possible in this administration and there's plenty of relevant data to back it up.

  • Not the Onion community is seriously having to work overtime in this presidency.

  • An anarchist who believes in collective punishment? Is this a typical thing?

  • The problem with that is it will just be a bunch of traumatized kids who have been indoctrinated and used as cannon fodder while the real problems are hidden behind keyboards and walled gardens. Children who have been taught that everything bad that happens to them is the fault of this "other" group they fear and don't understand because of the sheltered and twisted world they're born into.

Authoritarians would LOVE for this country to be split, much easier for branches of control to take over.

  • TIL

It takes 285kWh of gas and 15kWh of electricity to cremate a single person. The CO2 this generates is roughly the same as an 800km car journey. Cremation also accounts for 16 per cent of the mercury pollution in the air, from dental fillings. (link)

In response to the environmental impact of traditional cremation, alternative methods such as alkaline hydrolysis, also known as water cremation, bio-cremation, or green cremation, have emerged as more eco-friendly options. Alkaline hydrolysis is a chemical process that uses water, heat, pressure, and alkaline chemicals to break down the body, resulting in a sterile liquid that can be safely released into the local wastewater treatment system or used as fertilizer, and bone residue that can be returned to the family. (link)

Guess I'm signing up to be goo!

  • Just as a curious follow-up, did they go into what would happen if your body is rejected or is there already a back-up plan in place?

  • Would the bodies really be at a funeral home though? Maybe like during covid when they were running out of space in some locations but generally I think it only gets sent to a business if the paperwork is done. Would be weird to just start sending random bodies to different funeral homes across the cities every time someone dies. (I have no idea btw)

  • I haven't deep-dived into the whole thing but from the tidbits of information I don't understand how the previous reply is slop or false.

    From the article:

The California governor has been punching back at Trump over the past few weeks, particularly in the war of words over redistricting. Meanwhile, his press office has turned its social media feed into a stream of all-caps posts, pop culture parodies and AI-edited meme content, aimed squarely at mocking Trump in style while countering Republican initiatives.

from the link in the article: (Newsom's own words)

"I don't know — I hope it's a wake-up call," he said. "I'm following the president's example. If you've got issues with what I'm putting out, you should have concerns about what he's putting out as president

idk, allowing yourself to be changed because of your oppositions actions and repeating their behavior as "mocking" just seems like something the daily show would do... not someone in a political position and hoping to run as a presidential campaign. Not saying it won't be effective, may even pull in some centrists or low informed voters with the stint but still seems weird and not really the best course of action.

  • All I can say is, you'll still have those feelings even in a long-term after 15 years together. It's the "grass is always greener" kinda thinking. You're feelings aren't invalid, but the expectations sometimes doesn't come from reality and instead from media. We have such a screwed up view of what a relationship is "supposed to be" because of the shows and conversations we consume. Try to avoid romcoms/etc while getting your head cleared up a bit (anime's are also bad about unrealistic relationship expectations).

The reality is you're just two people trying to learn how to live together (either online or off), just be open and communicate properly. Saying, "Hey, I've been falling behind on my responsibilities and I have to focus on some stuff for the next few days" probably would've been a good heads up. She might've went to the party to distract herself from wanting to hear from you, maybe a response from not hearing from you, or maybe it's something completely different and just wanting to experience life. Just work on communicating and excepting feedback/learning their position. That will go forward with you regardless of any outcome and will be a way to work on things.

  • why do you think not being "pro-cop" makes you pro-criminal?

  • My rebuttal is that only those examples of greed are celebrated and honored in the capitalistic age. There are plenty of examples of people living in a form of harmony with nature and some current countries like Bhutan who are doing better. I imagine at different points in time you had a majority of populations living this way but those histories weren't preserved (like Native American) as well or taught as much.
