  • Imagine local libraries and post offices pushing this technology to get around ISP's grips on local infrastructure. Helps during emergency events, local organization, and could even put e-books available from the library. Post office's make sense because of their rural locations extending the nodes and brings them into the 21st century delivering physical and digital mail.

    edit: would also love to get notifications from local government this way instead of having to check facebook or whatever mainstream site that I need to register with just to view.

  • For those out of the loop with Bluey, it's a fucking amazing kids show. I really can't compare it to anything that came before, the style, the music, topics that they cover (and even how they approach things). It's truly a once in a lifetime show kinda like the original LOTR trilogy. Lola Sebastian just recently did a video touching on it and comparing it to the MAGA copycat, "The Mundane Misery of MAGA's Bluey Copycat". A good 2 hour video to put on for entertainment and get the gist of the show.

  • I don't agree. Just getting him gone will not stop the next Bush-lite from entering the arena and manufacturing full consent to go kill millions more in foreign countries. The individuals that need motivated and educated are the Nimby's (Not-in-my-back-yard, as in, "I don't care what you do but just don't do it near me"), this doesn't happen till shit is shoved into their faces and they're forced to deal with it.

    The average citizen is now feeling the economic hardships and the authoritarian boot of what the united states is. This is a festering wound almost a century old that keeps getting worse, it's now showing on our face so it's harder to dismiss. Anything being done to our populace or yours has been done 100x more extreme in the name of USA. For every Renee Good, there are millions who were murdered in the same way in their own country by a foreign presence.

    The civil rights movement in the states didn't concentrate on one elected official, it also didn't ask for an opposition party to come and save them if they could just "vote blue no matter who". If the Dem's actually pushed for repercussions and legal action I would feel differently, but they decided to do nothing and hand waved excuses of why they couldn't be bothered. I've given my vote to them my whole life, I'm feeling the tug of time and I don't want to spend the rest of it just hoping they decide to do differently one day (which they aren't even saying they will either).

  • I've been through both experiences with medicaid for one birth and insurance for another which needed NICU support (fucking huge shout-out to the awesome hospital staff that was supportive through it all). The vast differences of the experience is just mind numbing and the stress is through the roof trying to get around all the billing and headaches. I've thought of doing a write-up to share the experience but it's just so much I feel like it would be a whole side project trying to document the whole ordeal over months of anguish.

  • I'm not 100% on board with @sulgoth@lemmy.world because it gives off some "but you participate in society, interesting" vibes. However, as an American I am all for people from the rest of the world boycotting our products (and this time not because of the health implications!). When Canadians were promoting non-american alternatives I agreed with them so I think we can say fuck companies and still stand with the actual individual people who want peace and everyone to prosper respectfully.

  • I just bookmark the piracy megathread/wiki thingy, lemmy/reddit (backup). For streaming, I would probably recommend hydra, it's really all the same but that site has "auto-next" which I prefer. There was one site I used to enjoy that was just better than any streaming platform I've paid for, skip intro, skip credits (would even detect after credit scenes), subtitles in all languages and audio tracks even commentary, quick responsive high quality loading of any media your mind can remember. They went after it hard and I haven't seen a proper iteration since (every clone slowly lost features as they were whack-a-moling).

    For downloading, they're really all crappy (several link hoops to jump through) and hit or miss (for quality and selection you can't beat the ease of a torrent unfortunately). You can find what you want eventually but the difference in hassle is just crazy.

  • I think this is simplifying and twisting narratives. Republicans didn't plan for Trump, but the evangelicals and extremists rolled with it (just like progressives and antifa would've rolled with someone like Bernie). Besides an authoritarian take over of elections, the republicans don't seem to be putting anyone electable up on a podium lately.

    I doubt any of us are privy to what the Democrats plan and play long term, if anything they've been more effective at controlling their party if we're looking at them through the lens of being moderates. If you think they're "failing".... it's in the eyes of a citizen and not what their donor's interests are which is the priority of the party.

    I am interested to learn about how the rest of the world is handling the "news" issue though, I see a lot of media coming from other countries (like UK and Australia) which follow the same format of fox so figured we were all fucked when it comes to actually vetting what can be labeled as a news source.

    Invasive Species: Any species that has been introduced to an environment where it is not native, and that has since become a nuisance through rapid spread and increase in numbers, often to the detriment of native species.

    I don't think having a non-native title is necessarily bad, just that it didn't originate/evolve in that area.

  • I've been kicking around the same idea of a "community land trust and housing coop" for the better part of a decade now. It's on my short list of things I want to accomplish with my life that might be beneficial for society. Mixed housing community (large plots, multifamily dwellings, apartments, townhouses), support for cooperative company creation within the community, local store that sells the goods produced by the community (and online), plus actual facilities a community needs to thrive (community education auto/tech/farming/maintenance, help with transportation, etc).

    I strongly feel like Cooperative based communities is the only way to gently guide us into a better future. It can compete within the commercialized world while still maintaining growth and development because the profits are being directly funded into the community as a whole. I think one imperative action that needs taken within the coop is the establishment and expansion into other communities so you create a network of these villages that can help sustain each other in harder times. Could even get already established coop's like land-o-lakes or create other mass industry leaders so you're not stuck with small ma and pa stores that can't compete in this style of market we find ourselves in.

It's important to ask the tough question of "What would a company have to do to lose you as a consumer?" Another relevant topic I think that's important and ties into this is Hank Green's latest video on Electricity costs (Electricity is About to be Like Housing), the future and purchasing of energy stocks, and what the tech companies have to gain or lose in the sector.

  • The "member" videos and the new age verification was finally the push I needed to use youtube less. I don't get why creators are pushing their shit like that and it's EVERYONE it seems. Some are 1.99, some are 6+. It's just insane youtube thinks it's a viable market when everyone left cable because of the cost and now it's 10x more the cost for like 10% of the shit to watch.
