The word itself is ancient, and cognates in other European languages are used the same way. To go outside the region and language family, the Chinese version is "fuck your mother".
Sex is a common topic of profanity around the world, and the way things are referenced in a set expression often won't make literal sense. So in other words, it's probably a phrase that's appeared over and over again since we evolved.
Fake money for criminals is unironically a decent addition to the world, although it's coded in a really dumb way. Plagiarism machine is overhyped right now, but it also has some legit uses.
Was that the first one? That was the 1700's with, like, the first mechanical looms, so it's doubtful people even realised everything was changing. The whole "all manual labour will be replaced" idea seems most prominent in the mid 20th century, like with The Jetsons, which is between the second and third, if you're using this system.
It's worth pointing out that if AI can be an engineer, it could definitely be a manager of other AIs. Why wouldn't the operators be replaced as well? Or even the lawyers who set up and enforce the corporate charters? Meatspace jobs seem to be safer, but "foundation models that can do physical jobs are just around the corner" is something you definitely hear. And of course at the other end Lemmy thinks AI is totally useless.
I suppose in the scenario you've defined, yes, being a blue collar worker is the main option, short of owning a bunch of stuff. And like any other technological revolution, eventually the upheaval will end, there will be fairly high employment, and a lot of things will be cheaper than before.
I've seen negative numbers show up before on here. It's usually a federation thing, like someone joining didn't federate properly but them leaving did.
Killing all the bison was essentially an act of genocide against Native peoples, as far as I can tell. So sure, if you let the decisionmakers of the day define progress however they want, progress is a constant. Usually it's thought of as a singular, abstract thing, though, that can either be achieved or not.
Burning fossil fuels was a tradeoff. We built a modern industrial economy, but in exchange we depleted the reserves in the ground and have pushed the climate out of equilibrium. Depending on how you define progress, that may have been a step forward or not.
(Also sidenote: electrification wasn't yet complete, so rechargeability wasn't an early car cure-all anyway. Primary cell car vs. lamp oil/lamp oil byproduct car vs. multiple fuel steam car was the competition)
