  • I got a bag of those once when I was a kid. They were totally dried, but in they end it was just a bland, slightly salty way to jam shells between my teeth. 2.5/10, probably worse with rice.

    It's possible I was actually supposed to soak them first.

  • I haven't seen it never, but it doesn't seem as bad as people say. IRL I never tell people I'm veg just to undercut the steriotype. People finding out a couple years into knowing me never seems to earn any brownie points, which says something.

    I have noticed vegans seem more fine with me when they think I'm a carnist, which says something about them.

  • Everyone lives in a bubble, and that's fine. What's superlative is to actually check what bubble you're in, and peek outside of it every once in a while. If only more people did that.

    And then there are communities on Lemmy which feel both hostile and insular to me, like the one with “cars” in its name…

    Any community that's against something seems to end up that way. Even mildlyinfuriating, which is supposed to be just a lighthearted, general thing slides into rage jerk sometimes.

  • Depending on how you made that account, yes, that can completely foil a state-level adversary. Snowden got away.

    Saying the government doesn't care about our shitposting has substance to it. Saying they have infinite surveillance power and also that's fine, on the other hand, feels like it's been reasoned backwards from a conclusion.

  • The other extreme where only humans are off limits doesn't really make sense either, though. Forget about "pigs are fine, but not dogs and cats".

    There's a lot of open ground for inquiry on how to judge what you should kill in some logical, self-consistent way. It's too much of a hot button for many people to bother, though.

    It feels like a pretty smart place, but at the same time the "why did you join Lemmy" posts get a lot of responses about being permabanned from all of Reddit, which is hard to do. So, maybe you're on to something.

    If it's 80% those people, it's unexpectedly tolerable, and that says a lot about the environment influencing people's behavior.

  • There’s like this weird, subtle one upmanship about every little thing and a lot of people are very nitpicky

    Basically, branching comments make it possible to UM AKCHUALLY everything, and so people do. It's not necessarily meant in a mean way; at least not all the time. It's just a way to contribute a bit more to the discussion, and you can learn a lot from whatever ubernerd or person from the other side of the tracks you meet here. Or at least, I have.

    Lemmy is also political, just by nature of what it is. Highly political communities are always full of infighting and holier-than-thou shit, IRL or online.

    I’ve noticed that there seems to be an emphasis on being extremely serious at all times, as if every single comment is a PhD dissertation being evaluated or something.

    That's an interesting one, because it's nothing like Reddit or general political communities.

    It feels like it comes from the whole .ml/North Korea fan end of things. You go over to one of their instances, and there's a lot of trying to measure their dicks against each other with big words, long sentences and doorstopper citations. (If it actually makes sense is secondary)

    Anyway, no, it's not just you. There's a lot of good stuff going on, too. Although anyone still on Lemmy is obviously going to give that answer.
