When I went outside to feed the forest friends this morning, a blue jay with injuries that I had been hanging out with that was missing for a few days showed up.

I'm with you here. I have put qnaps in dozens of smb client solutions and I have only ever had problems with one of them. I don't stan qnap - truenas all the way. But their offerings are not nearly as bad as this thread seems to imply.

It is absolutely ridiculous. Folks like me with two decades plus of experience in massive scale deployments and scalable architectures can basically take a mini retirement right now. Because we know well that in 2 years we'll have so many messes to clean up that it will be a seller's market in the high-skilled engineering and architecture roles.
These companies are all dropping half billion dollar projects run by groups of Juniors who will never learn how to be seniors by the time these fragile platforms start falling apart.

More seriously though. Given abundance of food basically everything we 'know' about animal species interaction gets thrown out the window.
At any moment outside my window you find a dozen species eating side by side every single day that we were told would 'for sure kill each other before sharing a food source'.
What that says about scarcity in relation to humanity I'll leave to someone else...
Count another one for the sysadmin building a homestead in the forest while also building platforms for evil corpos from home.
I also have no intent of ever turning my farm into any kind of income. But it is definitely worth all of the extra work to spend any breaks sitting outside surrounded by animals, trees, water and sky.
