  • Ready to attack the feet of any passersby.

  • TL:DR, yes you can. But its not nearly as reliable as wired internet and is dependant on where you are.

I'm currently living in a place where only DSL is available for wired internet and its 1.5 mbps down at maximum so this is essentially my situation. I dont self host anything currently as I'm kind of in between projects but I could in theory self host something and access it remotely.

What I'm currently using for internet is a load balanced connection between starlink and lte. I'd recommend just using lte if possible. Starlink is good but it can be very spotty.

I'm surrounded by trees and the towers near me are old and go down more often that I would like or get bogged down so I need starlink but due to the trees it goes down frequently. Every minute or so. Sometimes I get 5 minutes of internet through it and thats fun.

  • IMO, the more self hostable options we have for services, the better. This sounds like a good idea to me.

Good luck with your project and thank you for taking the time to contribute to the free and open source community.

  • Yea opensense is the less polished than pfsense, but its decent from what I've heard.

I'm not familiar with Idirectord of shorewall. Do you run all that locally? Tbh peplink is ok for the most part but because starlink goes on and off so often, it can get stuck sometimes and because I can't have a lot of granular control with its load balancing.

  • Not using that specifically but I have to load balance my internet between starlink and 4g due to the area I live in where the only other option is suffer with 1.5 DSL. Even what I'm doing now is only mostly ok but I'm surrounded by trees.

Due to the restrictions of a lot of providers for mobile data, I use the 5g store with Verizon network, and had to use one of their routers, went with a peplink as at the time, it was the cheapest option.

Peplink does a pretty good job of load balancing between the different connections but i wouldnt use them unless you really have to.

You could use pfsense or opensense to load balance between two connections if thats what your after.

  • If anyone hasn't seen the videos Jim Browning did a while back about gaining access to a india scam call centers network and subsequently, thier cameras, its a fascinating watch but also pretty concerning.

One of the worst parts is that sometimes the police are on the scammers payroll, making it hard to take action. It would likely take an international effort to even make a dent against these kinds of places. They make a ton of money off these scams so its going to keep happening.

  • This is the way. My brother printer is a hl2040, came out sometime in the early 2000s. It still prints. I've replaced the toner cartridge once since my Dad gave it to me back in 2016.

The other day I needed to print something out and this was after I had reinstalled linux.

Just fired right up, instantly recognized. Its one of the best pieces of hardware I own.

  • Certainly counts, Samsung has a few features like grabbing text from images that I found useful.

My problem with them is its all online stuff and I'd like that sort of thing to be processed on device but thats just me.

I think folks often are thinking AI is only the crappy image generation or chat bots they get shoved to. AI is used in a lot of different things, only difference is that those implementations like drawing assist or that text grabbing feature are actually useful and are well done.

  • This is why I like Lemmy, never knew canvas blocker was a thing. Thank you.

  • Just reading the title, sounded like a great way to automate racism.

    And then I read:

This is just AI Phrenology, a continuation of the "scientific racism" movement that was invented to provide a justification for colonialism, slavery, genocide and eugenics

So uh yea, doesn't seem like a great idea.

  • I typically buy parts and peripherals from Amazon. Newegg can be good for the mail in rebates or discounts that you can get.

I typically don't shop at bestbuy unless I have to but I also live 20 minutes outside of town where I am so thats 40 minutes of driving that I don't wanna do typically.

Keychron was my last keyboard purchase, very happy with it. Full size mechanical keyboard, replaceable switches, so heavy I could probably kill someone with it, good keyboard.

Edit: I'm in the US so didn't think of micro center off the bat, but great option if you have access.

  • He is an absolute menace for me since I work from home most of the week. He's my little guy and as annoying as he can be, I wouldn't want it any other way.

And yes I constantly annoy him with squishing his face, pinching his cheeks, picking him up which he does not like but tolerates for 10 seconds, and playing hitting him which he loves because he's a sadist and just likes being touched in almost any way.

  • Most of the time, he's right next to me if not near me.

Right now, he believes it is cuddle time:

  • I love this idea, because I often have questions like this as I transition away from proprietary software to open source alternatives

I think listing what software equivalents it might replace listed in the card.

I do see its listed when you click on the info card in the main list, but having it be visible before that might be helpful.

I know a lot of people won't like the little ad cards when you do click on a software to review its page, but I think the way you implementted it is good. Its not intrusive and clearly states its an ad.

    Edit: removed bit about categories.

  • Washington Post still thinks "Democracy Dies In Darkness," but announces new mission The Post is focused on "Riveting Storytelling for All of America."

Bruh, so "no longer about the news" is what that sounds like to me. The paper was already dying to begin with dude, you didn't have to put a bullet in it.

  • I like that, some YouTube video i came across had the sentiment that it was ok to be a renaissance man, jack of all trades kinda deal. I liked that a lot since i have a few different hobbies and im not particularly great at any of them but im good for the most part.

Made me feel like i didn't have to be perfect and it was cool to just be doing stuff.

  • If i can figure it out I'll be sure to post something lol.

So far, i found a python project that is supposed to enable RAG but i have yet to try it and after a reinstall of my linux pc to Popos, im having less than success getting ollama to run.

  • Me personally, i use my AMD 7700XT to run ollama on my main pc. Can be helpful for troubleshooting as the internet gets worse amd worse to search especially if i dont know what the issue is. Thats my main use case for it but id like to set up something with RAG and use it to help me with documentation if i have questions.

I don't think its super worth it to use a VPS for an LLM if you already have a decrnt gpu that you can run it on. If yoy dont already have the hardware, plenty of older gpus can run the models pretty well. My 1070ti still kicks ass all these years later and you can find them for $100 bucks or less on ebay used. Ive used it for ollama as well and it does just fine.

Will it be super fast or a really big model? No, but if its for personal use, i dont see any benefit to paying a monthly subscription for it and like i said, works well enough for me.

Its also more secure and private to host it yourself if thats worth anything to you. Thats one of the biggest reasons i self host.

  • "This utility-style regulation will slow down rural broadband builds."

What a load of shit. As someone who lives in a rural part of Washington, can confirm that Comcast makes no fucking effort whatsoever to bring internet out here. They could give two fucks about building new lines and only care about dominating existing copper shit.

God this makes me so mad. Fuck these assholes for making the internet actively worse for consumers.
