  • Tbh the possesive form of "it" is a bitch. For all other words you do 's to indicate possession, but for this exact word you leave out the apostrophe. Whether vs weather, their, there, vs they're, or your vs you're, they all have nothing on this contra intuitive POS of a rule.

  • Chicken math:

    You have a couple of hens and a rooster. They're pretty chill and everything's cool. But you can't eat the birds you have, then you wouldn't get any eggs... Maybe you should get more birds? You wonder what it will cost you to hatch and rear some chickens. Before you're done guestimating, one of your hens is broody, so you let it do its business.

    You starting building a secondary run for momma hen and her chicks. You forget the material price, but you do notice the text message half way through the month. It's from the bank, you're getting close to insufficient funds on your debit card. Anyway you move some funds around and head off to the feed store. Chickens need special feed and different feeders/water dispensers.

    The chicks grow and you start to see something akin to personality. You want to optimize for size, so you wait with the harvesting. Suddenly some start presenting male characteristics. But the rest? They're too cute and you could do with a few more eggs.

    While picking up considerably more feed, you notice the text message from the bank, you ignore it and start looking at that incubator that's on sale. It doea look neat. Next spring then hens start laying eggs again, you decide to not wait for a broody hen, and you start collecting an incubator's worth of eggs.

    When the eggs are about to hatch, finally a hen has become broody, so when most egg have hatched momma gets her eggs switched with a load of chicks. You don't have any chicks to loom at indoors now, so maybe you should hatch a few more. You've heard about a different breed that you want to try out, so you find eggs on facebook marketplace and drive for 2hours each way to pay 50€ for the 24 eggs your incubator can hold. Of the 24 eggs 15 are fertilized and as you miss a single critical water refill only 10 hatch. You do note that that's 5€ per chick. But you think to your self "hey, it's an investment, now I have this breed and can hatch more down the road"

    You keep this up, and second year you are worrying that the authorities will discover that you have more than the 30 chickens you can have without registering. You're also on a first name basis with the clerks in two feed stores and you ask about their kids ball games when you get your weekly 80kg of feed. You try to recoup some of the money by selling eggs. You have no idea what an egg costs to produce, but you can't get yourself to charge more than about 50 cents per egg. You don't piece it together, but your income doesn't match your feed budget. Your bank loves you, because even though you should be able to save money for a car and a holiday, you end up getting financing for all major purchases and going on holiday is overrated anyhow. You like to stay home, who would take care of your birds?

    Anyway ⬆️that's chicken math...

  • Yeah, I found some interviews with the driver, marking the 15th anniversary etc. He seem pretty tormented by the fact that he killed two people. There's a whole philosophical/political debate on whether he should have been punished, but I think that's a bit too off topic even for me at this point.

    Suffice it to say, it was a tragic event and it happened almost 30years ago. We can't do much about it, other than learning.

  • I don't know how "privacy friendly" the Chromium branded chromium browser is. But if I had to use a chromium browser, and Edge wouldn't suffice, that's where I'd look. Brave would probably be last on my list of browser choices, because I don't even trust the installer to not give me a little bit of Palantir flavored malware. And that's to a degree that I wouldn't even run it in a VM on my daily driver.

    If I wanted to spy on privacy minded individuals, who are harder to spy on than the average person, then I'd launch some privacy product, work up the hype, and have it spy for me. I could have formulated that idea before Brave was launched. Seeing how Brave is associated with Palantir, to me it's already fishy. And when it's main selling point is privacy and conducts themselves exactly like I would have expected a malicious actor to do, then I just don't use Brave.

  • Why brave? I see a lot of seemingly tech savvy people using brave, and I don't get it. Edge or chrome can do the same, in terms of rendering, and you don't need to have software associated with Palantir installed.

  • I found sources stating that the platoon was wearing regulation lights. They had white light in front, red light in the rear, and were marching in three rows (sorry, don't know the correct English military term, Danish is "geled")

    When I looked at the photo I discovered that the soldiers were wearing a reflective band around their right boot, as is regulation when moving in traffic in the dark.

    So maybe my first point of "stfu it's for your own sake and people got killed making these rules" don't stand, at least not with my example. But then again, it doesn't sound like we're disagreeing on this one.

    Apparently the driver was charged with negligent homicide, but I can't find any verdict.

  • At about 0620 on February 17th 1997, a platoon of 38 royal guard recruits, and additional NCO and a lieutenant, were marching along a public road when the driver of a Ford Transit van plowed through the platoon from behind. 20 were injured, of these two died.

    I know it must have looked so stupid, and felt incredibly embarrassing. But somebody made a decision to not have you guys killed.

    Update: I missed providing a context for the photo. It's from the site of the accident. Taken on the day at an unknown time. The soldiers in the background are the ones who where lucky and didn't get hit.

    Looking closer at the photo now, I feel like editorializing a bit. As this happened a couple of years before I was up for the draft, the line up of the gear was all I could remember, when I went looking for the photo. It was seared into my memory, although it looked different in my head. I didn't remember neither weaponry nor soldiers.

    At the time of the accident, it will have been pitch black. Sunrise was at 0728 that day, looking at the light I'd say the photo was taken some time after 0800 at the earliest. That approx 20 soldiers were left to wander about a field, in a state of emotional distress, for +2 hours, instead of getting picked up, or at the very least rounded up, says all you need to know about how well prepared the Danish defense forces were back then. I feel bad for those guys. Half their platoon has been picked up by ambulances, and now they're on their own.

  • I'm stuck using fucking facebook, messenger and whatsapp. Facebook and messenger are where all the non-techie people in my kids' sports communicate, and I've got some dear people far away that uses whatsapp.

    I had deleted my account back before it was called meta, but had to get a new one. Fuck me if I'm going to install their app though.

    If we could wean people off of meta it'd be great.

    1080p = 1920x1080 = "Full HD"720p = 1280x720 = "HD Ready", or at least according to wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Display_resolution_standards "HD"

    4K has to subtypes 4K UHD and DCI which is both 2160 lines, but UHD is 16:9= 3840 pixels wide, and DCI is slightly wider with 4096 pixel in a 256:135 format. But both are "4K"
