  • Sure, but we can't make the argument that everyone vouching for age verification is doing so for the same reason.

It is undeniable that there is a very large, and growing, population of parents and adults that want age restrictions for adult content. I think their concern is valid, too. However, they don't care how it's done.

That's where big tech "saves the day" by generously offering to collect all of our IDs and tying it the our accounts. Secure, and private, age verification can be done with zero knowledge proofs. But that probably won't happen without competent government

  • If it's over 18 years old, does it automatically pass age verification

  • Right. Which is why Cloudflared would block you if it's detected. But regardless, if for whatever reason, you ended up in court for the content you copied, the judge would probably give you a low fine. Obviously not legal advice, but the US justice system doesn't have time to care about people making digital copies of DVDs they've purchased.

It's irrelevant anyway, since none of us are just copying our own DVDs... But for legal reasons /s

  • They have to be. They have to at least somewhat comply with laws to avoid lawsuits and fines

  • Also not as ideal if their ISP uses CGNAT. Still waaay better than fully open, but you would be giving access to many households

  • Gotta be careful with cloudflared and media. They can block you if they detect copyrighted materials, even if it's your own DVDs. You can setup TLS certs so the traffic is at least encrypted

  • "UwU is all that wam for wittle old me?"

    ~ AI probably

  • That is objectively worse.

It is absolutely subjectively worse. There is 100% an argument to be made that this is a better situation than not having a proprietary cable, and the only option is to purchase an overpriced replacement from select manufacturers.

you have to figure out which port supports what

I have never personally used a device like this. Every port has supported every function for me. I know it happens, but I work in IT and have not come across a device like this yet.

However, I can use my laptop charger on my steam deck, my phone, my ear buds, and of course my laptop. So given the problems it's solved vs the issues it's created, we are in a much better spot from my perspective.

  • How is that worse? It's a new problem, but it's not worse. Even with propriety cables, you might have memorized the specs, but you couldn't change them. Now you just need a single high quality USB-C cable for your various devices. If you don't care about fast charging, then it often doesn't even need to be high quality

  • I was using VLC, but after they converted their cost into a subscription platform of $0 a month I had to move. Was going to use Jellyfin, but now this... Guess I'm gonna have to start putting all my media on film

  • “Jellyfin Premium+ One Super Unlimited (with Ads)” will increase to $0.00 USD*

Does this look like a joke to you? Jellyfin and their typical price hikes. They'll probably cut the pay of their volunteers next, if I had to guess.

  • God, the insane amount of energy it would take to even remotely measure a difference in the ocean water is astronomical. You might be able to cause some small impact in a relatively small radius that could impact wildlife, but I feel like there are open enough areas that not much would be impacted in the area.

  • You have no idea where you're talking about

  • They are not end users. So the End User License Agreement wouldn't apply

  • Nope, it does the same thing:

Pi's minimal system prompt and extensibility let you do actual context engineering. Control what goes into the context window and how it's managed.

AGENTS.md: Project instructions loaded at startup from ~/.pi/agent/, parent directories, and the current directory.

SYSTEM.md: Replace or append to the default system prompt per-project.

  • That is like saying the customer didn’t pay, it was the company they work for.

Not quite. We are actually working for the money being provided, it's a transaction.

If there is a $20 item a person wants to buy, and there is a $5 tariff on the item, the company then increases the price to $25. The executive order was made illegal, queue the refunds, now the company gets $5 back. They now got $30 for an item that was $20. Obviously skipping all the actual taxes and costs, but you get the idea.

The only actual cost they could argue is the opportunity cost. Someone might not have bought the item because it was $25, but would have bought it if it was $20. But that amount is impossible to know.

  • The money the companies would be getting back would be opportunity cost, not any actual money. The companies didn't pay tariffs, the only people that do are end consumers. So if it was just about actually dollar amounts, they are just getting even more of the consumers money in the end.

What could be argued is the opportunity cost. People may have been less likely to buy the product due to increased costs. Fewer sales, less profit, etc, etc. But there is no way to get an actual number since we can't know exactly how much they would have had.

Despite that also being a logistical nightmare, guess who is putting in a shit ton of time and resources into ensuring the rich get their money? It would be pretty easy to just do a tax credit for consumers, and likely a lot more accurate. The companies would get the money back in the end anyway, so what's it matter.

  • I love plenty of morons. I don't have a choice, since I'm American. You can love someone and also recognize that they're a moron, and shouldn't be telling students absurd unverified facts. You can do both

  • You're defending her because you also believed it. It's okay to be a moron
