  • It sounds like it would be very easy for them to never know with this system.

    Amazon seems to have jumped in as a middle man and will automatically complete the purchase on the site seemingly forwarding the item itself to the initial purchaser. They're basically just creating an invisible front end for other peoples stores and absorbing it into the main amazon interface.

  • I feel like it doesn't hold up well specifically because we're living it now, but I dunno if I agree on it being overrated. For me, feels like 'out of date' or maybe just depressing is a better word.

    When that stuff was fantastical and served as a warning, it had meaning, now it just makes us sad. It's like oh yeah, we have that now, but it's not even the government doing it, just some random snack company and we're all just going along with it.

  • The way people define a successful dating life is different, it can be especially skewed in an unhealthy fashion when you're younger and viewing that as a good metric tends to be more popular for men which is who we're talking about here. The key point though is that the numbers we've collected don't seem to be matching when it comes to follow-through. You can find a lot of vague data with 'would you avoid dating' going above 80%, but the ones that collect 'have you dated recently' are still pretty rough but don't tend to get anywhere near that high. Can't understate how rough most of the data here is though. The best we can usually do with real data is correlate negative personality traits you'd expect to be more common with conservatives and extrapolate from that. The data on whether shitty people get laid doesn't look great for us and goes pretty far back comparatively.

    I don't think we'll get it any time soon because I think everyone would hate the results and I don't even know how you'd work it or who you'd get to pay for it, but I'd love to see someone try to do a cohesive study on the effect of political stance on an individuals dating life throughout it's entire lifecycle. Even if someone got it going too, we're basically just proving that people make poor relationship decisions which I don't think anyone is going to be surprised by.

  • You'd think that would work, but it may be part of the problem. The idea that right wing guys don't get dates doesn't seem to have a lot backing it up. Kind of a new phenomenon to study, but for short term dating, studies on characteristics that seem to be common with far right ideals seem to indicate the opposite.

  • I wish it was true, but not sure it comes into play. We're basically just establishing that if you are a citizen of a state, you're a citizen of the United states as a whole. That is definitively separated from "No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States". I'm still hoping this is just them yelling into the void to scare people, but there is also some precedent for denaturalization.

  • The biggest problem I see is that retailers generally don't want to increase visibility for their competition. Competition usually lowers prices, good for consumers, but business is not a fan. Even in non competing markets, consumers only have a limited amount of money. That $50 you spent on clothes is $50 not spent on power tools. The main reason some sell on markets like eBay/amazon/etc is because they're so large and centralized that you can't really avoid them.

  • The war is real, but the lines are just dramatically stupider than some think. It's the same culture war we're fighting elsewhere, the point of the war is establishing that one singular point of view is the default and the others are invalid.

    The war isn't about being able to say "Merry Christmas", the war is about whether it's okay to say anything else.
