  • Just so yall know who some of you are agreeing with, this person managed to get permanently booted off the !france@jlai.lu community which is very VERY tolerant of differing opinions compared to the average fediverse community. I remember them, they kept defending racist news outlets for no good reason and using far right talking points and dogwhistles (while claiming to be a leftist), until the mods got tired of their constant denial.

    Modlog (and this post's comment section) shows some genocide denial too, no shit they don't feel welcome in some communities…

    One of the points of moving to Lemmy, for me at least, was to get away from people like them.

  • Well yes, the issue is precisely with what you are taught in school vs what is in history books.

    Gandhi was the culmination of centuries of violent anti-colonial struggle. While he was doing non-violent resistance in the wake of a war, the HSRA and Anushilan Samiti acted as violent threats to incentivize the UK to work with Gandhi or risk more terrorist acts, while various extremely violent soldier mutinies weakened the british grip on the country.

    MLK only worked because of the implications. The panthers, urban uprisings, Malcolm X were setting the country ablaze. MLK's platform was that there were two options, dealing with him or dealing with the rioters. The white house had no choice due to the scale of the riots and the threat of an escalation in violent tactics (panthers were starting to show up with big guns).

    In both cases, what won was the diversity of tactics. The non-violent face of those events are all that's taught in school, but the full picture of those movements can be found in the history books. You are in no position to be dismissive of others when you are the person in the comic.

  • Well I'm french, in my country strikes are considered violent actions.

    As is always the case, it's the oppressors not the oppressed that set the level of violence.

    You don't get to decide whether your actions will be violent or not, it's all about how the state will react to them. If they start sending riot police at you with orders to be as brutal as possible, legislating against your strikes, sending organizers to jail, killing some of your protesters, the non violent aspect might collapse quite fast. Or at least that's what happens when we organize mass strikes or student protests in France, and we have a pretty big history of that :)

  • Pretty much everything I draw is observational satire, so the odds someone else has already drawn something on the same topic are pretty high yes. Comics communities are full of accidentally (or not so accidentally) derivative content. It's the nature of the medium.

    It's rarely one or the other, eg. Suffragettes demonstrations were made much more threatening by the bombing campaigns that were happening in parallel, Gandhi was made much more threatening by the HSRA campaigns, MLK wouldn't have achieved jack without urban uprisings and the black panthers turning up the pressure in the background, etc.

  • You're not "owed" a reply. Nobody is ever "owed" a reply. Sometimes people don't want to engage with a comment and that's fine. In my case, the reason is not "having no rebuttal", but rather finding your method of communication repulsive to engage with.

    I have two minutes to waste while my food cooks so I'll engage briefly.

    First off, the only "childish" interaction here is you calling me a tankie, stupid, childish, instead of just asking questions like a regular adult capable of human to human communications.

    Regarding the 100 million figure: it comes from The Black Book of Communism, a slop book that was written for Maurice Papon's trial (a nazi war criminal responsible for deporting my family to death camps), who used it as defense to say "sure we killed people but communism was worse". This book uses ridiculous figures such as nazis killed by the USSR during WW2, soviet soldiers who died fighting nazis, an estimate of children not born due to the one child policy, among many other absurdities, to reach its 100 million tally. It's still to this day being quoted by politicians and media personalities in my country to support the rapidly rising far right against the regular social democratic left. You don't have to be a "tankie" (which I'm not despite your assumption) to realize red scares are propaganda and have consequences.

    As for the pareto crime figure… you live in a society in which loitering in the wrong place, jaywalking, stealing 3€ of goods from a supermarket can constitute a crime, but regular white collar crime gets solved in private and doesn't even go to trial, while most rapes aren't even reported to the police out of fear. We don't have accurate crime stats, and drawing conclusions from current crime stats is akin to drawing conclusions about "here's who the state considers to be undesirables" (poor people end up being over represented for a reason). 80/20, 13/90, and other similar "crime rate figures" have become racist / white supremacist dogwhistles.
