  • The only major accident I've had is when I was 17 and worked over the summer for a major auto manufacturer. I was tasked with writing a piece of software to make inputs easier to a bash script some nerd made on his own free time that they now pretty much relied upon since it saved them several hours each time they run the script.

    To try and make a long story short(er). I had access to a server, that I was told was a temporary server, and there was nothing important on it, I had access to create and run files. I did not have access to monitor, kill, or terminate any processes. I made a silly mistake and created an infinite loop, but it wasn't your average infinite loop. It was the worst kind of infinite loop imaginable. Took a few executions to diagnose where exactly I had fucked up. I fixed the problem, no more infinite loop. And it actually worked. But these processes still sat there in the background. And they grew, and grew, and then another server started helping out to try and save his server friend. And when that wasn't enough, a third server tried to help, and so on.

    I noticed that things were starting to run a bit slowly when browsing the server for files, others complained as well that the servers were slow today. And then I get a phone call from the head of IT, asking me if I need all of these thousands of processes running to which I shamefully replied "no....". But it was too late, and so much had stopped responding that they could not kill it. They pretty much emergency shut down two thirds of all their servers in house in order to save the rest. I had pretty much created rabies but for servers. Anyone infected had a death sentence. It was only a matter of time. Pretty much anything, anyone had worked on that day was gone.

    I had a coffee with the head of IT later, He didn't blame me and was really nice about it. The data on the server I was given access to was not important, that's why they let me use it. But they had not considered that the server load when above the threshold is then shared to other servers, and that they should have isolated the load from that server as well so it doesn't spill over to another. It was a genuine lesson learned for everyone.

    Also, You all know these are really simple to make yourself right? Pretty much minimal skill required. If you know how to put minced meat in a pan and turn the heat on. You're pretty much halfway there. The other half includes knowing how to turn on an oven.

    Though I had not considered that the hardware might shift so much as to be rendered "useless" for the average consumer

  • Look, I'm not entierly sure what point you're trying to make. But I can assure you, you're not going to get there by putting words in my mouth, nor by trying to tell me what my own sister was thinking or hoping for when we were kids. Because you know absolutely nothing about us. So just stop.

    I thought I'd follow through with the analogy since you engadged in it. But now you're clearly reaching too far.

    Nothing I'm saying here is a justification or an excuse. It's an explanation of how it works.

    People, and governments often have a very different set of worries.

    As an individual, you might not care if it's the US or China that has access to your information. For the vast majority of people, it's not going to affect them personally.

    But if you are American. The US government will care if China has access. And if you are chineese, then China will care if the US has access.

    And if you're a russian politician, well, then you're probably more concerned about what Russia knows than US or China. Seeing as neither of those two will help you "fall out" of a window.

    I was angry with my sister when she "spied" on me. I took her to "court" for a "trial" and the "judge" gave her time out and a 4 hour supervised probation period.

    But it would be a whole different ballgame of actions and consequences if some random person were to do it Neither is ok. But one of them is more severe than the other.

    Contrary to popular belief, what china imports the most is actually electronic components. Followed by fossil fuels.

    Those two categories alone account for ~40% of all Chineese imports as of 2024.

  • I looked it up quickly to get some context. Google (alphabet). Which is a huge consumer of energy. Has deals directly with the electricity producers. It's reported they pay ~4-12 cents per kWh in the US, depending on where the energy comes from.

    And they can get those prices because they are an enourmous customer that can sign multi-year deals that benefits the producers ability to expand production.

    So... i would love to know how this company managed to get rates around 1-2 cents per kWh

  • They didnt say the planes weighted 25000 pounds. They said it could exceed 25000 pounds. My guess is that not even the passenger seats were installed in this run.

    1mw of power from the 4 engines. For 30 minutes, 500kWh. So for $5 they paid 1 cent per kWh. Somewhere there's a bunch of bullshit hidden.
