  • I agree with this.

    Outside of the reasoning OP gave, some people just aren't that into sex, some people like it but it isn't the main way they connect with their partner, etc. So long as both people are on board with this approach and it's not one person "putting up with it" then I struggle to find downsides.

    I've been with my partner for 15 years (married for 10 if the marriage thing feels critical to people) and so long as attraction is there I think it's absolutely possible to learn to care for each other's needs, just the way you do for any other thing in life.

  • idk bud, pulling out my unamused face is a cornerstone of my humour. Being old helps because it's an "oh shit" moment rather than a "lol you are cute when you are mad" moment.

    When I was in Uni we got a cake made that said "just write [message] on it, and don't mess it up" and took a photo of the student society president (who ordered the cake) frowning at it. Comedy!

    Oh, just after WW2? When there were too many women folk in regular employment and folks needed a way to get them back in the homemaking more babies to fight future wars? Babies that could put in their "time" with the military for a promise of a middle class life? What's a few years of doing the dirty work of the empire if it gets your that middle class dream?

    Or did many women just go back into the informal labour market so they could do domestic labour for their own homes or others? Idk where you grew up I always saw women working - childcare, cleaning ladies, etc.

    Where did this prosperity come from? Oh, from producing things other countries couldn't? And once other countries could it kind of all broke down? Hey, those people who make your cheap goods want a better quality of life too...

    Capitalism is evil, no doubt - but the post war boom american dream is propaganda, comrades. It makes the individual an accomplice to capitalism, for a few more crumbs than those who don't fall in line.

  • Yes, I find them beneficial. I prefer when the warning itself is spoilered too. That way I can choose to totally swerve the content and don't face anxiety over the subject matter at all.

    I'm not offended, but it's a good example of people not seeking to understand what they are replying to before they add their two cents.

    I understand this is what happens on the internet. It's not possible to communicate perfectly.

  • A few things come to mind:

    1. People don't seem to understand or care when a post is just to vent and the individual isn't looking for feedback. Some people have a really hard time not chiming in with their take.
    2. It's a low effort reply that only requires a surface level understanding of the situation (and that might even be generous) so it's very tempting to people who are itching to chime in on everything.
    3. Some people feel Very Smart when they make that comment because it means (in their view) that they are gifted at getting to the heart of the matter and seeing things as they truly are, without bias. There is also zero consequence to them being wrong about this.
    4. Sometimes people get defensive when they see their own behaviors reflected through someone's vent post and it's now personal.
    5. It's sometimes used as a general saying, like "You are the problem with this country nowadays", again the commenter feels real fucking smug about their pattern recognition skills.

    I'm sure sometimes OP is the problem but I'm not sure it's possible to have enough information to make that kind of judgement.

  • I was never able to really make all that stuff work in the first place so I've got three "smart" bulbs I bought in maybe 2018 that still (mostly) work, and am generally switching my smart plugs to mechanical timers because I only really use them for grow lights.

    I do feel better about being away from home overnight in winter with my weather station (which includes a sensor inside the house) but everything adds nothing to my life at all.
