Migrating here (or maybe keeping both) from @ArcaneSlime@lemmy.ml

Will put an eternal curse on your enemies for a Cinemageddon invite.

  • Same here lol, I will for sure!

  • Awesome, thank you for the help/info! This seems like a good first step, I'll try it out!

  • Awesome thanks for all the help and info, I'll definitely check it out! I think this will be a nice step to help teach me these concepts and get me to the other projects!

  • So I have an interest in self hosting things in the future (nextcloud, chatmail), but for now I'm scared of opening my network to attacks, and also I don't have a network right now I just hotspot from my phone when needed and torrent things at my friend's house.

That said how would I go about using this? I'm guessing something to do with docker or porteus (maybe? The other one that wasn't vulnerable to that recent thing), then when I want to check out X website I just "spin up the docker container" (still not 100% what that means but I've heard the verbiage), hotspot the pc (for now), and run it through the program? Am I understanding that right?

Sorry I'm so green, gotta start somewhere! I feel like a grandma calling an Xbox a "Nintendo" haha.

  • He's calling the adventure "The World Needs More Whimsy Grand Tour."

    Fuck yeah, I like him.

  • Pets?! My tags are FDX-B, can they actually read them from that distance?! I know UHF RFID is a thing but afaik average FDX-B tags found in pets aren't capable of that.

Uhhh.... if it can do that it can also read the one on your keys for the gym/pool/work/apartments...

  • Especially when the only other answer to the problem is "windows is actively preventing you from doing X/doing Y to you because they hate their users and you are the product."

  • I'll save you the trouble:

"Well linux is maintained by volunteers not a billion dollar multinational corporation that should have the budget to do that"

    With a side of:

"That's because windows got in bed with PC OEMs and contracted to be the ONLY preinstalled OS they can use years ago (when it also sucked less), so it became the standard, and now vendor lock in rears it's ugly head, so the other multinational corporations cater to windows. Had any other OS done that you'd use that, you don't like 'windows' itself you like vendor lock in."

  • Spot on, though I will admit, the gaming working as well as it does is a pretty recent development to be fair, and everyone (especially not people who don't use linux) may not be up to date on that info.

Also to the CLI, sure you may not need it as much as you used to, it isn't "doing everything with commands" anymore, but I'll be honest claims of "never needing it" are often exaggerated on the other end. In reality, most linux users will still need to use it sometimes, varying by usecase and distro. To that end, I will say, before I switched myself this was the largest thing holding me back, but I'd heard it had gotten better, and windows was changing shit on me so often that I figured "if I'm gonna relearn X on windows every month I might as well just bite the bullet and learn linux instead." I watched a few videos on youtube after searching "bash basics" and "linux terminal basics" and followed along like it was a basic computer class teaching use of Powerpoint, and within a couple hours (maybe three) I was not just "no longer scared" but almost comfortable in the terminal. Doing this has greatly improved my experience over the years of running linux and I recommend it to all newcomers even if you then still avoid it after, if just for a passing familiarity. Basically: "Only use sudo carefully, and always keep a backup of any important files, so if you do break your shit you only lose the time it takes to reinstall. Also you can use timeshift or snapper." These days I'll even open up a terminal inside of my GUI file browser sometimes, I love the CLI now.

As to dual booting, I like to recommend either if your laptop has two drives dedicate one to each OS, or if not, linux will run on a potato, if you or anyone you know is going to upgrade PCs because "it runs too slow," no it doesn't, that's just windows' bloat. Take the old HW for free or cheap and slap an appropriately weighted distro on it, then use it to learn while you still have your main, then when you realize how much better it is just switch your main over too, it's free!

  • Does anyone know how to download content off those weird Roku channels? I'd like to download a bunch of stuff off of one before they (I assume) shut it down.

  • Well humor is subjective, but beyond how I feel personally, uhhh yeah people do it all the time and it never gets called out as body shaming or any such thing, nobody cares. Bald, fat, ugly, small dick, all are fair game, especially if you have at least one other undesirable trait. Andrew Tate is balding, Trump is fat and has a little dick, anyone who has a large vehicle also has a small dick, anyone who owns guns has a small dick, the British have a small dick, etc, it's everywhere and everyone else seems to love it.

  • Same question for an old EEE pc with like maybe 1gb ram, trying antix now, may try Slax next, will look into peppermint.

  • "Stupid bitch thinks he's smart because of his college degree but doesn't know dick about machining." Is a less sexist and more accurate interpretation, your degree doesn't mean you're better or smarter than anyone else just because they chose another path. This has fuck all to do with sex, race, whatever.

E: Hurt a couple elitists' feelings on that one I see lmao. Sorry, you're not better than anyone just because your piece of paper says so.

  • Honestly I wouldn't doubt that they do, supposedly leaders both ours and theirs see us as being in a sort of cold war space race style AI race, and I guess that effectively means we are.

But I for one didn't need their campaign to hate what I can see for myself is an issue, murderbots, surveillance, and dumbing down people further have always been things that I think are "bad."

  • I didn't need some Chinese campaign hatred was my gut reaction.

Actually, at first, for like a week, I was OK with it. Then the affects started piling up. My boss (warehouse middle manager) is AI coding apps to FUCK ME at work (figuratively fuck me ofc, but he's a dickhead. Claims to be communist too [and I'm not even, as unpopular as that is here] and meanwhile he's like "here's some anti-worker bullshit that will help strangle you, isn't it neat, I made it with AI! The same AI that for some reason I think won't replace me first." Fucking kys. I work with the actual product, he tells people "do this." His precious AI will take his job 2y before mine.)

I'm not even on the environmental side of it, though that is a big concern and useful ammo to me being in the anti- position, I cannot stand the dumbing down of humanity, and the murder robots that are officially now a deployed reality as of last week, and the enhanced surveillance. All of that is a reality in my daily life (besides the murder robots but OH BOY if you don't think that's coming to a town near you..), I do not need propaganda to hate what I can freely observe that I hate.

  • Though tbf "underage people sharing nudes with each other on snapchat and looking at porn" doesn't necessarily mean you have to kill the children immediately, you can give them some time.

Besides, it's "you have three months to create and implement code that tracks the ages of all your users and all activity across all apps for the ones under 18, and then use that to stop their cameras from working when nudity detected, and stop their messaging services when nudity detected, and stop their internet when pornography detected." I don't think we need the follow up "lethal force engaged" just yet, but you never know they may start blowing up computers like Mossad's pagers when a kid googles "boobies" soon enough.

  • That little snaggle tooth, give him a treat for me!

  • But can it be social if there's no other people? Can one "socialize" with AI?

  • I was gonna say a Coyote (you'd be surprised how far into a populated area they'll travel) but then "Europe" and I don't think you have those, so nevermind (unless your country does have them and I'm wrong, then that's my guess).

If I had to guess given that, fox or rival cat. Maybe stray dog.
