  • I wonder if second-sleeping would help you.

You go to bed pretty early, like within a couple hours of sunset early, let yourself wake up naturally around midnight, stay awake doing low-key activities (sex, have a snack, read a book by candle light, talk to your bedmate if they are up, etc. basically candle-light-or-darker activities, a low-wattage warm white bulb on a dimmer does nicely, as do flickering candelabra bulbs) then around like 2-3, fall back asleep until a bit after dawn.

Thats the sleep pattern humans had, as far as we can tell, for all of history before the invention of artificial lighting (its mentioned so casually, with zero explanation, in historical documents as to just be the de facto experience), and its a pattern a lot of people naturally fall back to, but with improper timing so they don’t make it to the second sleep phase, and just end up with a dysfunctional rhythm that has them waking at 4. Or they fully fall into the pattern and feel great, like my retired aunt, but are worried because it’s “not normal”.

  • That feels so claustrophobic for the poor belowdecks person. You think they do seating based on phobia for this shit? You know, make the experience of flying just a tiny bit more miserable with bodily dread and stuff?

  • I got sick of the price gouging so I got a bidet for $25 and a pack of 60 cotton washcloths for $30, and other than for guests and such, I just don't use TP anymore. If I’m wiping after a bowel movement, it goes into the laundry and isn't used again until washed (sanitary cycle with bleach). So each cloth is used for a day at most.

I know that probably sets off the squick for a lot of people, but it is basically the same soil level as worn underpants (and way less gross than cloth diapers!), since the bidet takes care of the actual mess, so it just doesn’t bother me, and in the long run saves a ton. Extra bonus, I never run out!

  • 3 yrs 2.1 k comments on this account and probably another thousand scattered between other accounts, and not a single one made the list :(

I’ll have to try harder for the next one, I guess.

  • I’ve seen this meme a lot, what’s it from?

  • I used to hatch oothica for my local environment. Baby mantids are useless and idk how they stay alive other than cannibalism. They dont have wings until the 5th instar (molt) and then only females get them I think. Until then they are just stationary and starve or something gets close enough. What a dumb survival strategy.

But! They are so fucking chill. They don't mind bing handled, even fully wild ones. They will just move onto your hand and stay there. You can move them around, feed them from tweezers, etc. its honestly worth the slight effort it takes to hatch them to assure you have some around to interact with :)

You are a big moving tree to them, long as you aren't trying to harm them. They don't care about you. But if you feel them bugs often enough they might see you as a big friendly giving tree

  • If this one was built like the one I took down, some, maybe all, of those boards on the bottom run into the structure itself for support, and those are beefy boards, especially on their side like that. Mine was supported with those and diagonal supports just to prevent sag.

Id guess they are replacing ground-tied supports, and those are just to keep the small bit of pull from causing damage to the roof and stuff while they swap them. Just long enough for the photo.

That or its completely floating and the boards are just for a laugh.

  • I did some rough math and they’d eat about one cow every 4 days on average, or a herd of about 100 adult cows per year, assuming that was their only food source which seems unlikely when chicken or game birds are cheaper, easier, they eat garbage food and their production rate is almost 1:1 feed to meat. Plus far more available to say nothing of egg and mice/rats, which are also easy to raise on garbage food. I just don't want to do the math when I already went for cows for whatever reason.

Whomever inherited responsibility for those cats (I’m guessing servants, since thats who was caring for them to begin with, lets be real) was probably incredibly thankful for the substantial wealth transfer for their loyalty. That used to happen back in the day. Rich people wanted to be remembered for giving their riches away. So many public works and private wealth transfers are a result of this post-humous restoration of their image. (It wasn’t enough to deprive their offspring, of course)

  • Lol yeah, like I wanna live like a refugee in my native country. And I’m wrong somehow for not being OK with that?

Get fucked with that shit, friend. I’m not willing to gamble what little I have on possibility, better infrastructure or not. Its not like that would change the regime I’m under or anything.

  • Probably the evolutionary arms race between rapey males and females. Males have long corkscrew penises that inflate rapidly during copulation to fill the tract of the female. Females, what with their desire to choose mates and all, have evolved corkscrew vaginal tracts with dead ends and stuff that spirals in the opposite direction. Forced mating frequently ends without insemination, as a result.

I am genuinely unsure of the mechanism by which successful mating actually happens, considering the anatomical arms race and all (maybe it’s like dolphins, which have a similar problem. Female dolphins have a false vagina and can choose where the male’s sperm goes by changing her tail position), but they seem to be able to reproduce, so it is what it is, and I’m not super keen to look it up at the moment.

  • According to the first inflation calculator I found, adjusted for inflation in today dollars thats $3,682.67/cat/yr, and I think thats probably plenty.

  • I rub my chin against their heads in the same motion as licking would produce. They seem to interpret it as grooming behavior, as they’ll start grooming me back when I do it, whether or not they know I’m not actually grooming them. Well, the one tries to shove her nose up my nose when I do it, but close enough.

  • I’m not who you replied to, but this is a stupid take.

My area doesn't have public transit to speak of, its semi-rural small town, and everything is in another town, so I’m forced to drive. Everywhere around here is like this. I explicitly do not have the option to move to a more urban area because I live in a very low cost of living area, which means very depressed wages, and I genuinely cant afford to move, much less live somewhere with walkable infrastructure or decent public transit, without better wages first. Because no, getting rid of everything and starting over isn’t an option, nor should it have to be.

And I didn't choose to be here in the first place, either. When you are born into a very low cost of living area, you often get stuck there or can only move somewhere even further behind, because wages are so depressed you can’t save enough to get into a better area. The only way you get out is if you can land a good job before moving, which is insanely difficult, since remote work usually scales to the local wages, and who can afford to travel for in-person interviews?

Just move is easy to say when you can bring home more than you pay in bills, or have enough in savings to cover a few months until you find work or whatever, and its really easy to say when you already live in an expensive area. But its not actually a practical option for many of us.

So idk about that other person, but yes, I’m fucking tired of being told to just move if I don't like how things are. Condescending out-of-touch bullshit, is what it is.

  • I think the word you were looking for is extradite, which is sending someone home/to the country where crime was committed, to face their justice system.

Excommunication is kicking someone out of a religion/the church, specifically christian afaik, though not all use that word :)

  • I’m like 90% certain its crabdance/crab rave, something I’m not actually familiar with but which many many many people on the internet say they will be posting when certain horrible people die.

    Why, I do not know.

  • I might just do the ps5 one cuz I genuinely never use that fucking thing. I play disc games (as in wont pay for digital) and there just aren't a lot for ps5..

  • Thats an awful lot of work thats going to cost taxpayer money when “move over, gramps, let the next batch have a try” is completely free.

Who cares if there are still a couple good old people? There are also good young people chomping at the bit to take over. People who aren't hopelessly out of touch with reality and the rest of the population.

People shouldn't be in government past an age where they likely wont be alive for the next decade of consequences from their actions. I’d personally lower the cutoff to like 64. They got their chance to set policy, let people who will live in the world they are making be the ones who steer the boat.

If we try that and it ends up not working, we can reassess. But until we try we’ll never know because those people aim to die in office, and burn the place down on the way out.

  • “Wrecked EV battery” usually actually means batteries that were in damaged shipping containers. Perfectly good and never used for anything, but not sellable for car use anymore.

At least all the ones I looked at were like that.

  • Thanks for the reminder that I need to order trichogramma wasps to fix my moth problem again. Downside of keeping my quail inside; moths infest very easily. Upside, i learned years ago that trichogramma wasps (stingless egg parasites) are cheap and work like a dream on pantry moths, plus they are so small you’ll never see them (like moving sand)
