  • Corvids and psittacines display human child level intelligence. They use tools. They recognize other people. Hell the psittacines can mimic speech.

I personally suspect it's a matter of energy density. Birds have to use almost all of their available calories on flying. Doesn't leave a lot of energy left over for a massively hungry brain. No clue what's holding back penguins, emus, and cassowaries.

  • That's what the XKCD that was posted says. Mostly.

  • The popup text on that one is quite funny.

  • Meh, she wasn't actually made for us. The artist that made her was commissioned by the Sultan of The Ottoman Empire, and he paid up front, so the artist got to work in the mid 1800s. The Sultan wanted her standing at the entrance to the Suez Canal, which was due to open soon. That's why she's Egyptian/ Middle Eastern. It also explains her crown. She's a light bearer. She was supposed to signify the knowledge and wealth that flowed from the Ottoman Empire to Europe and Asia. She originally carried a torch and a bouquet of spices and herbs.

Unfortunately for the Sultan, he died before the artist, or the canal, was completed. When the artist contacted the new Sultan to let him know he was ready to construct her, the new Sultan told him to go ahead and melt her down for all he cared. He graciously said that the artist didn't owe him any money back, and that he was certain that the artist did good work, but he believed that statues were graven images, and therefore they no longer wanted the statue.

    Fast forward to 1871.

The artist has a meeting with The French Ambassador to America, The President of the French-American Friendship Society, and himself. Turns out the US centennial is coming up. The ambassador suggested that the artist remove the bouquet, and replace it with a book that contains the most American sounding thing ever, and they'll never notice she isn't European. So the ambassador and president gathered up the funding, and sent the newly dubbed "Lady Liberty," from the Parisian warehouse she had been gathering dust in, to New York in time to be fully erected by July 4, 1876.

  • Should I have used the word "wealth," or would you prefer "sum of the total dollar amount?"

  • I kinda want to look up Fraggle Rock to see what that show was about, but I'm worried I'll be disappointed in my former self's taste. I know I watched it when I was like 4-6 y/o.

  • Mostly with his completely volatile temperament, threatening WWIII, threatening tariffs and trying to ignite trade wars. He doesn't seem to understand that he isn't doing reality TV anymore, and the market doesn't approve.

  • Nobody eats a pizza crust first.

You would be surprised. I have met such people. In specific circumstances, such as stuffed crust, I will occasionally eat pizza crust first.

  • I would argue that it happens to mediocre drivers. Good drivers slow down and get into the correct lane a mile or two in advance.

  • Trillions. There's an article that hit my feed that shows that the NYSE and DJ indexes have lost 5 trillion dollars in value in the last 3 weeks.

  • Install the app "5 calls." It gives you a script and the relevant representatives and senators phone numbers to call. You don't need to look anything up, and it will remind you to call them at whatever intervals you set. I call weekly.

It is free and I have never seen an ad or request for donations

  • Someone's been playing All Will Fall

  • Absolutely, copyright or patent, not both. Though if, and only if, they function identically in duration, I wouldn't see the downside of having both other than additional expenses actually filing for both

  • Copyright is a good idea. It was just stretched beyond all reasonable expectations. Copyright should work like Patents. 15 years. You get one, and only one, 15 year extension. At either the 15 or 30 year mark, the work enters the public domain.

  • Shit, save your $$$ and get some GPUs since the market would crash.

  • Said every ancient Greek ever. We've got a true conservative here, at least in the realm of sexuality between two consenting adults.

Well I guess that last clause would cause you to be anethema to the modern conservative causes.

  • Fruitcake is actually really nice, provided you make it yourself. Those bricks they sell in stores are nothing like the real thing. I think the store sold stuff is intended as replacements for structural support walls.
