    It really is time we put some of the blame on the planet too. It should care, we humans have already started a mass extinction event. Climate chaos and global nuclear war could massively devastate earth and create a new ice age and following super hothouse earth. Why isn't the planet earth doing anything about this???

  • Enshittification continues :( There is also more advertising in other countries, so now r/all on old is increasingly flooded with different languages making it unusable.

    Unfortunately, Lemmy still can't replace reddit. There are so many specialty subreddits that have no real chance of migrating. There is a split between (neo)liberal .world and communist .ml triad so there is no reasonable political discourse across the spectrum. Then there are instances that can go down any minutes requiring migrations that bleed users. Power tripping moderators.

    Maybe there are technical solutions to some of this, maybe not. Like mirroring / "archiving" all specialty subreddits and their posts into lemmy communities. And maybe some way to migrate communities without losing posts and users. Or democratic systems for communities.

    Lemmy is great for what it is, but people shouldn't delude themselves this is a replacement for reddit.

  • There is liberal anti fascism and autonomous anti fascism. Liberal (e.g. using lawsuits) anti fascism is good, but never enough alone.

    You have to deny fascist speech, because fascist speech equals fascist recruitment. You have to deny them platforms. The early age of the internet made that impossible, and many nerds like me had no clue about this. Freedom of speech warriors against stupid governments etc. Much of that was correct, but what got forgotten is that you need active moderation and laws to limit hate speech from proliferating. And neoliberal governments never pass those. Like fascism, neoliberalism believes in inequality.

    This current wave of fascism is a long time in the making with the ultra conservative and christian talking points and rural talk radio. When talk radio started ranting against abortion, THAT was the time you should have started autonomous action to stop their continued broadcasting abilities.

    I learned the political theory for anti fascism way too late. This is a good book review on this.

  • I think we're talking a bit past each other. Maybe there are stories that work as movies but not as TV, and some that work as TV but not as movies.

    I think Star Trek has something inherently episodic with a Starship (or station) traveling the galaxy (or having the galaxy come to them) that does not translate to "lets make an epic movie story".

    The other way it can probably work better. I kinda liked the Dune: Prophecy. It doesn't really "harm" the movie. Lots of TV shows for star wars too that do not harm the movies.

    But a movie coming in an fundamentally altering the world building? For a single blockbuster? Killing Vulcan for epic scene? Great for a movie, sacrilege for the TV show.

  • Ok, hear me out: First, fuck IP. Second, AI is pretty lackluster atm, but a lot of people are experimenting. It can reach an amazing high visual fidelity and FX already, and lackluster things like acting and errors or fight scenes could improve in the coming years.

    It could be cool to see sort of like "councils" for various franchises pop up and approve / produce different AI fan projects and crowd sourced directors that tell or retell the story of our franchises.

    Like imagine a dozen different fan writers and directors creating different seasons 8, 9 and 10 of game of thrones. Much will be shit, but as technology advances it might be possible to even merge or "remix" the scripts of different productions together to come to an "ultimate edition".

    Similar to how Hamlet or other classic theater stories are remixed.

  • Movies have to be successful at the box office, and star trek movies had to be Hollywood blockbusters. Completely different production environment compared to TV. I don't see how that can be fixed, and it has nothing to do with being a good filmmaker. How does an outsider come in, write some fancy script shoehorned into a world that they may or may not be good at? For me as a Trekkie, every single star trek movie was a disappointment.

    But that they allowed the shitty Abrahams movies to fuck up the series? The very heart and soul of star trek and the federation? Unforgivable. They couldn't leave the optimistic fantasy of utopia alone. Too philosophical. Not enough profit. Bastards.

  • I'm a bit more jaded when it comes to games art, or maybe snobbish lol. I also have some industry experience. I dislike a lot of art direction and consider much "dilettante art" that is just made very detailed or overly cool. It often works and is fine, but it's not art. The real art you find in indie games. But take a look at zerospace for example, it's pretty detailed and technically good 3D unit models, but overall it's pretty pedestrian art direction.

    And that is not always easy to avoid. Like you can only tell your concept artist that his art and color choices remind you of a preschooler so often before he cries and rage-quits, leaving you to have to find and hire a new underpaid slave. Or your modellers that they'll have to redo all of this garbage and stay the weekend. What you already had to stay the weekend unpaid because I made you believe in this project??? /s obviously lol.

    Video game development is technically very demanding, underfunded and very badly paid and has time constrains, and a high complexity and "unknowability of complications" what gameplay elements need to be redesigned. I recently watched an excellent Diablo III post mortem of the development hell they went through, despite their best intention and talent and funding - in the end it was rushed out.

    So being able to prompt an AI to create or make variations of concept art and then iterate EFFORTLESSLY over the overall composition of the resulting work - my theory is that it will allow for greater artistic freedom. At least for the "game director" similar to a movie director. It does not just have the potential to be cheaper and produce more slop, it also has the potential to elevate and empower to control and iterate over the creative vision. The source code could be like an annotated game design document in a special markup language with inserted links to approved artwork and random seeds that you can just tweak and rerun the whole game generation. Not just for visuals and audio, but also for the gameplay.

    So with gen AI you might potentially end up seeing more and better games that can be considered artwork or masterpieces.

    Obviously this is all speculation, if this actually can work technically and economically. And AI psychosis is real, there might be a dead end in genAI and LLMs ahead instead of improvement. Also friction and pain in the media often breeds beauty. See how well book authors do without a publisher and editor to keep them on a tight leash lol. But I do think it is well worth considering, investing and exploring this potential.

  • The IP law is purely a function of economic power, so we know how that will go. To the maximum benefit of the plutocrats that rule our global civilization.

    But the more interesting part is the philosophical discovery: If a piece of code can be generated from scratch by a machine that is not creative, then any comparable piece of code is also not creative. In other words, only the very first time a new type of code or algorithm is written can there be creativity - if one follows your argument that LLM machines cannot be creative. This essentially raises the bar for copyright, and makes an objective test of what is copyrightable or not possible. If you can describe something in a prompt, and get a result of comparable function and quality to a human written version, that code is not creative either, therefor not copyrightable.

    Obviously we're not quite there yet, but the more LLMs improve, the less code becomes copyrightable.

    Coding becomes pure craftsmanship, like cutting and sanding some lumber and nailing it together to build a shed.

    So if we were a rational and logical species, the overwhelming amount of copyright would be deleted and become public domain. Because it is now worth only the cheap solar power needed to generate it.

  • You can also set a LLMs to completely rewriting code snippets from scratch to perform the same function, writing and fulfilling the same unit tests. Not just rewrite in a different language or changing variable names. Basically the transformative abilities of LLMs can make copyright obsolete.

  • Not true, this does not occur frequently. This study and software LiCoEval from 2024 found 0.88% to 2.01% of code "strikingly similar to existing open-source implementations". Afaik this is mostly textbook examples, snippets from stack overflow snippets or common github repositories, often replicated api examples and language boilerplate. How you prompt and refine also matters, and for generating novel code or business logic the LLM simply cannot use memorized snippets.

    Presumably since then LLMs have worked to reduce that number of memorized code. Since LLMs cannot memorize all their training data, that number is limited. LiCoEval can find the often memorized examples and train to remove them, or suppress them, or they find other ways to reduce direct reproduction from memorization. For example it would be possible to do what malus.sh does with all the training data. Then it cannot memorize copyrighted code.

    So for a model that came out 2026 this already small number might not be that relevant anymore.

  • So if there was a software with the exact same capabilities as the holodeck, just in a VR headset, you'd just say "Nah. Take it away. That does not amuse us at all." :D

    This discussion basically comes down to a technical question about progress. How quick and how far we can move towards that goal (ignoring economic and environmental issues). Obviously we're at 0% and it's speculation about technical progress (and AI and hardware becoming good and cheap enough).

    PS: I'm mostly curious because to an extend understand the irrational hate against AI, because there is justified bullshit going on. But what I don't understand is how a trekie who knows all about the holodeck can look at genAI and not connect the two for VR and video games. Millions watched those examples of advanced prompt engineering and generative AI and thought it was cool. But now hate gen AI categorically.

  • I've become disillusioned with such approaches because coders tend to loose themselves in the aesthetics of ideas and architectures. And that can lead to high verbosity for something that could be much simpler, which then makes code harder to read and browse. Basically I doubt that complex software problem can actually be planned and designed without programming them first. That could well be just my own limits.

    So today I prefer a bit of a "return to monke" C-style procedural approach and don't even like OOP anymore.

    I do wonder if there is a more formal framework for natural language (AI prompt) programming. Maybe LLMs could be used as an actual research tool to explore a high number of different architectures of well defined programs, and then compare them. Like have the same app programmed in hundreds of different languages, designs and idioms, and then compare them to get the answer to your question.

And why would that not be noteworthy?

    Obviously it would be in a VR environment at best. And rather limited in flexibility at first. And balancing and game design would not become considerably easier. And yes, you'd still need grit and the luxury to at least work part time on it without getting paid. IMHO good games are already drowning in human sweatshop made slop that is controlled by publishers who have the capital.
