  • I'd be curious how they got the book in the first place because if I owned a used book store I'm not touching that without a very good reason. You can't in good conscience sell it, because any private collector who wants it is 99.99999% of the time a terrible person and should be kicked out of the store; it's probably not something a museum is interested in even as a donation; and destroying it feels a bit too... I don't know, it wouldn't be wrong to destroy it but the irony is too thick for me.

  • I really should watch the Odyssey; I immediately knew what movie and scene this was from without even having seen the trailer because it lines up so well with what I imagined from reading that scene, that's often the sign of a very good adaptation.

  • I wonder if Twitter just hung onto market share in India while it hemorrhaged users in the anglosphere? IIRC we've seen this with Facebook in a few places. Basically everyone I want to follow moved to Bluesky or at least is posting their content there too - there's a few local governments that are stuck in 2010 technologically due to indifference or lack of budget that still only post stuff to Twitter but that's fairly unusual, but is infuriating enough for people to post about it.

  • My dad used to own a Miata, he was unable to get on and out of it with the top up. I loved borrowing it when I would visit because I'm a foot shorter than him and never had any problems with it. There's some perks to being short.

  • Quite a few banking apps work on Graphene OS. My bank isn't listed and it works on Graphene too (I really should contribute to that list). The big downside is probably having to buy a new phone for it but if you need to upgrade anyway it might be worth considering. The only app I've run into so far that didn't just work was the Target app but it works with a bit of tinkering. I've only been using Graphene on my phone for two weeks now but all of the apps I used on my old phone are on here and working.

  • Someone else in the thread said that Earthbound organics, Costco's brand, is also Taylor farms (note I didn't verify their statement). Costco does seem to hold their produce to a higher standard than everyone else and don't seem to be part of this shitty situation, but that's not helping if your goal is to boycott.

  • He also kept digging when the backlash hit. It wasn't a great look, and the initial take was, at best, deeply naive.

    That said, I'm actually considering switching to Proton over this. I think his statements are nowhere as bad as this Mullvad donation and I'm in the slow process of de-Googling and Proton's other offerings would be a huge step towards that. It probably isn't great to have email and calender and passwords and cloud storage and VPN all through one company, but it's better than two with one being Google.

  • There's a lot of "but why don't they stop if what they're doing is so unpopular?" comments and I've got one more explanation (on top of the obvious money and technofaschism points).

    A bunch of these tech CEOs are part of the "Rationalist community" and possibly believe in Roko's Basilisk which is a thought experiment that an otherwise benevolent AGI would punish anyone who didn't actively work to bring it about. Someone want to link the BtB episodes about them? I know the Zizian episodes go into it but iirc they've got a dedicated series about these weirdos.

  • The rumor I heard around the internet is that the Motorola will have all of the security features Graphene is asking for (and Motorola gets to benefit from both the Graphene nerd sales and the improved security, Google does it in their Pixel line for some reason so there's got to be perks for Googly Android) and an unlocked bootloader so you can install Graphene, but it won't be shipped with it.
