  • Oh God yes. The studio push for reboots, remakes and adaptations already runs the risk of by-the-numbers 'creativity', but those live action remakes are the natural progression. Not even a new take or reimagining, just a lazy, safe cashgrab.

  • Gender-affirming care massively reduces the difference, but transwomen are still likely to be faster than AFAB women:

    Prior to gender affirming hormones, transwomen performed 31% more push-ups and 15% more sit-ups in 1 min and ran 1.5 miles 21% faster than their female counterparts. After 2 years of taking feminising hormones, the push-up and sit-up differences disappeared but transwomen were still 12% faster. Prior to gender affirming hormones, transmen performed 43% fewer push-ups and ran 1.5 miles 15% slower than their male counterparts. After 1 year of taking masculinising hormones, there was no longer a difference in push-ups or run times, and the number of sit-ups performed in 1 min by transmen exceeded the average performance of their male counterparts.

    But what season you're born in also influences your strength and fitness:

    There were significant main effects of birth-month for cardiorespiratory fitness (F=4.54, p<0.001), strength (F=6.81, p<0.001) and power (F=3.67, p<0.001). Children born in November were fitter and more powerful than those born at other times, particularly the summer months (April, May and June). October-born children were stronger than those born in all months except September and November. This relationship was evident despite controlling for decimal age and despite no significant inter-month differences in anthropometric characteristics.

    So maybe it's not fair for all those poor summer babies to compete against unfairly blessed autumn athletes?

    Also, have you tried listening as you turn? With some of the cheaper rotary locks you can just barely hear the first correct letter click into place.

  • I think women are very interested in sex, and pre-modern times the stereotype was that women were the horny gender.

    But I think what you're describing is more about gendered social norms in conversation. The fact that (some) groups of men don't talk about sex that openly is because sexual prowess is tied up with social status and most men wouldn't feel comfortable discussing sexual problems, failing to satisfy their partners, not really enjoying sex or anything like that for fear it makes them less of a man. And because of that, guys talking about how much sex they're having, or how they tried this new thing and their lady went wild for it, kinda come across like they're bragging.

  • Yeah, I got into a discussion on this topic and my suggestion is that sports split on other categories, not just gender. Boxing already does weight classes, which is good, more sports should do that. Can't we have sports for people under 5'8"? I'm sure there's lots of shortkings who'd love to compete seriously in a league where there height wasnt an detriment.

    This approach seemed to offend both sides of the trans sports debate.

  • Thanks! I'd seen the key borders setting but thought it'd change the edge of each key, not the entire key. That looks great now!

    So far, really enjoying the keyboard. The predicitive typing seems better than SwiftKey, which got kinda shitty in the last year (I assume because it changed to some amazing ai powered nonsnense).

  • Installed futo and its seems good, but I can't see how to get amoled themes. The dark theme is charcoal grey, and even "Amoled Purple" isn't pure black.

  • SwiftKey has high contrast B&W themes that are amoled black (if that's what you mean?) Downside, it's owned by Microsoft and almost certainly recording everything I type to train their ai. But everytime I try out an alternative something drags me back...

    Do you think 20 is too young for a guy to get married?

  • The answer really depends on you and your relationship. People will say 20 is too young, and that people make bad decisions or might have regrets. Sure, that can be true (remember your brain doesn't finish developing til your late 20s!) but older people still make bad decisions and have regrets.

    If being married, and starting a family is important to you, and you really believe this person and this time are the right choices for that then do it. I got married at 40, and by the time it was official we'd basically been living like a married couple for a few years after dating for a long time before that. By that time I knew my spouse extremely well, I'd seen them in happy times and sad, I'd seen all their flaws and weaknesses and they'd seen mine.

    We're very happily married, but there are time when things are hard, and there's definitely been moments when I wished I was with someone else, but I knew what I was getting in for and I made that commitment. 98% of time its amazing and I'm so happy with my eelao, and even those moments of frustration or upset are different. When we were just dating, they would make me consider whether we should be together, now they make me want to find better ways to be together.

    If you want to feel more confident in your decision, consider the common pitfalls for young couples. How well do you actually know each other? Have they seen you at your worst? Do they know those deep fears and anxieties that influence our life's but we don't even admit to ourselves? Would you love them if stopped looking attractive? Have you talked about the future and are on the same page about kids, where you want to live, etc? If you both really understand yourselves and each other, and want to spend your life together then do it!

    British people of Lemmy, what's up with the normalization of hatred/dehumanization towards working class people in the UK, considering that 60% of the UK population is considered to be working class?

  • You're right that Britain has a big issue with classism and there's lots negative stereotypes about working class people. But 'chav' is a term for a specific subculture within working class British culture. Most people I know who hate 'chavs' are working class people who have to interact with them regularly. It's like if you were claiming that anyone talking about 'thugs' and 'gangstas' were hating on working class black Americans.

  • I think people spend less time have long conversations with people that they trust, which are best space for nuance and exploring ideas honestly. If you're messaging on social media, or even writing articles for blogs or publications, there's a whole bunch of incentives and barriers that push people away from nuance.

  • Really depends on what you want from a job. Does good mean high pay? It's generally rare to have high paying jobs with low entry requirements, but ICE seem to be throwing money around if you've got no morals and abnormal low levels of empathy.

    If good means 'good for community' or 'fun' or 'doesn't involve speaking to too many people' the answers will be quite different.

  • Same as most of the other commentors, this isn't something I've noticed. But that doesn't mean it doesn't happen, so it would be helpful to hear some examples. I feel like most of the time people here are pretty supportive / helpful, but maybe I've got a skewed perspective?
