  • I can confirm that for Croatia it's accurate to a point. At the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century two separate towns had an outbreak of syphilis, and therefore the disease was named after these two places locally. From my understanding, in both cases the disease was mostly transmitted due to poor hygiene, and not much through sexual contact. In the second town, aside from the aforementioned, a bunch of kids and their families were infected because the local doctor vaccinated the kids against pox using materials from an infected child, unintentionally.

But otherwise for the most part syphilis was called Gallic disease.

  • No, thanks, I'll pass. I hate tongue anywhere near my clit. Different strokes for different folks ;P

  • I worked in customer support/sales for the largest ISP in my country. We were always understaffed because it was a shit job, so the turnover was high. We were forced to sign overtime, weekends and holidays included. I'll never forget this middle management asshole who enthusiastically attempted to convince me it's totally worth it. He does it, too, and he's always happy to see higher paycheck. At the end of the month that overtime amounted to ~€15-20 for me. Yeah, fun times. I was thrilled to kiss that job and its abusive management goodbye.

  • Wow, that's crazy. I had exactly the same looking feral black cat for a day years ago. Unfortunately, she managed to escape somehow and I never saw her again. She was so terrified, she hid in one of my desk drawers. I wonder if I can find a photo.

  • Just reading all the activities you do makes my hypo, PCOS self crash, lol cries. I also have mysterious gut issues that caused me to be bed bound for a while. Tried to get back to cycling and my body just crashed. I try not to think about the time before all this, but it's still depressing.

Good job on your progress, wish you all the best!

  • It's also a thing in (parts of) Europe, too, unfortunately. Only college professors were paid decently. "Were" because I don't have up-to-date info.

  • Not the US, but I have an acquaintance who is a "Christian". She's an immigrant. She goes to church with mostly nonwhite immigrants. She's extremely racist, among other things. You can't make that shit up 🤷🏻

  • That is my setup. Plus VPN to home on phone.

  • Damn, it's just a name in my region, never seen it in that light 😂

  • These heated products are okay for home useage. But my feet usually don't warm up when walking outside in cold and these things aren't very durable in that sense. Maybe I should just move closer to the equator. Kidding! I can't handle heat either 😞

  • I have issues with keeping my feet and hands warm (they tend to be ice cold), so socks that could keep my feet warm would actually be magic 😭

  • It's really quite depressing and infuriating. I'm finally financially in a good spot to afford better quality clothes. I want to buy something that'll last me years and years. I don't like to participate in fast fashion. So I looked up which brands people recommended. Turns out everyone's in agreement that even the expensive stuff from previously well respected brands is now overpriced crap that falls apart within a year.

I've got clothes from 20 years ago, some even much older from my mom that holds up better than things I bought a year ago. I hate it, fuck late stage capitalism.

  • It's definitely a stereotype for a reason. Briefly talked to a US or Canadian couple in their 40s-50s last year, they were traveling Europe. They were in slight disbelief that a driver wouldn't take dollars/any other currency from a Chinese couple who had no Euros left on them. I wonder how it would go for me if I tried to pay in Euros in NA. Probably not great.

  • To expand a bit, it comes from a Proto-Slavic word which was used for foreigners in general, but mostly to refer to Germans. It's also why most (all?) Slavic languages have basically the same word for German(s)/Germany, similar-sounding to the modern Russian one.

  • In this case it would be an intolerance, and those you really do have to find on your own, unfortunately. And figuring it out can be extremely difficult.

  • Kind of, but not really? Nano by default displays US English(?) keyboard bindings which are different to the keyboard I have, so I still have to have a cheat sheet open when I'm on a system with nano-only editor.

  • For me the only thing I look in new phones now is camera quality, since I only take photos and video with my phone. If that was upgradeable, it would be awesome. Plus, now even Android is getting the Apple treatment this year, everything is just getting shittier.
