  • do you understand how much of the civil rights movement has happened since the eighties?

we've made them make concessions before. we've won before. we could win again.

and you... you have no idea how badly i wish i believed what i just said.

  • all i know is that you wrote almost 1500 words about why voting is pointless and then did not provide any alternatives

you advocated for voting in local elections, but not before saying that voting in local elections is pointless because local politicians can be easily bribed. you advocated for joining unions, but not before saying one should be wary of doing so because unions can be captured by the institution, however that's supposed to happen.

all there is in that thread is 1500 words of doomerism. fuck doomerism, ima vote.

by the way, stop putting your own words on a pedestal just because you wrote them when you were slightly less sleep deprived. i've tried it before. it rarely works out well.

  • Not really.

The defining characteristic of the furry fandom is a fascination with anthropomorphic (= walks on two legs and can talk) animals, whether in a sexual context or not. The sexual side of the fandom is the side that gets the most attention (and, admittedly, it is pretty big), but it is by no means the only side. The appeal is in creating a character that represents you to the wider world without revealing anything about your real life identity beyond your aesthetic choices, and along with it a persona that you can adopt for a while that has none of the responsibilities of being a human and a cool animal tail to boot. Dogs don't have jobs. They don't worry about bills. They just run around and play and be dumb and boop each other's noses. And sometimes, after a long day as a software engineer, vaccine researcher, or brain surgeon, that's exactly what you need.

With regard to the sexual side, every individual furry has different places where they draw the line with regard to resemblance to actual animals. Some stay away from sexualizing anthropomorphic characters altogether, most draw the line when a creature stops walking on two legs, some are okay with characters that look like actual wolves and cheetahs as long as they talk and think like humans, a few only draw the line when it stops being fictional, but the one thing they all have in common is a strong condemnation for actual, real-life bestiality. Zoophilia is not tolerated, anywhere. Most furries view it as morally equivalent to pedophilia.

  • what message am i supposed to take away from this?

other than that OP takes an offensively bleak view of what life in africa is like?

  • so like the autopilot in Elite Dangerous. will it get you there? sure. will it get you there fast? ...not exactly.

  • what communities are those?

  • i'm talking about the comments on most any post in memes@world or memes@ml

  • tf you talking about, lemmy is 10 times the shithole reddit ever was

  • I'm reminded of a Linus Tech Tips video in which they built a gaming PC with the express purpose of heating a room/house. To do this more effectively, they connected a bog-standard water cooling loop to an actual radiator like you would find plumbed into an old building, instead of using a purpose built PC water cooling radiator like every other water cooled PC ever built (I guess because they either thought it wouldn't dissipate enough heat (in which case why not just use more of them?) or because they forgot those existed). They flushed the radiator with water and vinegar before putting it to work and what came out of it was... colorful. Even after flushing it much more thoroughly, after putting it into the final setup, the system did not perform anywhere near as well as expected due to the copper water blocks inside the PC getting covered in rust and stopping conducting heat. Those systems are no joke.

  • obviously removing it immediately and without proper medical training and tools is a horrible idea. i don't think anyone's disputing that. but surgeons leaving bullets in people's shoulders is also not a universally applicable solution for the aforementioned reason

  • exactly. running an nmap scan alone involves minutes on end of just sitting there, waiting for nmap to do its thing, and hoping that the network administrator doesn't notice your computer running the most obvious port scan of all time, barge into your borrowed cubicle, and say "what the hell are you doing"

  • Fire sprinklers have two requirements: to be able to turn on immediately if they're ever needed, and to dispense something capable of extinguishing a fire. In order to accomplish this, the pipes that feed them are constantly, 24/7, full of water, providing constant pressure on the sprinkler head to be ready to feed it with water in case it ever needs to go off. These water pipes are generally not used for anything else, so the water does not tend to circulate. In fact, there's usually a sensor in them that detects if the water is flowing (and thus if any sprinklers have been triggered, providing somewhere for it to go) and activates the building's fire alarm. When a fire sprinkler goes off, the water that comes out has been sitting in that pipe (an iron pipe if you're lucky, a lead pipe if you're not) basically since the building was built.

    That stuff is NAS-T.

  • tl;dr "nothing matters, everyone except me is an idiot"

truly i bow to your vast intellect

  • deep sigh

    1. There are two choices in the United States 2024 election. No third party stands a ghost of a chance of winning. No, not even if the 30,000 people you can reach on Lemmy all vote for Timothy Greenparty.
    2. A Trump victory in 2024 would not only be just as bad if not worse for the citizens of Gaza than Harris would (Harris has at least said she wants Israel to stop. Trump wants them to finish the job), but would also pose an existential threat to a large number of vulnerable Americans (trans people, immigrants, women seeking abortions).
    3. Given the margins of victory in 2016 and 2020, Kamala might not win if leftists don't vote for her.
    4. Snoozing fascism for four years is better than inviting it through the door now, and buys us time to build our defenses for when it comes back.
    5. Regardless of whether you do anything else to fight fascism or not, if you don't vote, or you vote third party, you raise the chances that a Hitler admirer will enter the white house.

I'd like to focus my counterargument. Which of these statements do you disagree with?
