I’m on a project now suffering because the design was really not reviewable. Now we’re trying to work on it and it’s really obvious the design was all bs

    I’ve somewhat given up, in that he’s shown a talent for staying beyond the law and has millions of groveling sycophants: he’s unlikely to ever be held accountable for his crimes in his time remaining. But his minions can. His children can. His legions of cult followers can.

    When our psychotic breakdown is over, will we have the honesty to hold them criminally liable?

  • Does it count to teach them ai? I’ve had this guy in India, working for me on and off for a couple years now. He’s really bright and was coming along nicely … then ai hit

    His first like 6 months of ai use were horrible. Absolute junk that harmed the code more than made progress. My code reviews were brutal.

    But he figured it out. He’s a heavy ai coder but it works. My code reviews rarely find issues anymore. It’s too early to know about maintainability, but his code looks good to me

  • More AI projects need more human maintenance

    So this is key here and it might still be up in the air. I’m generally skeptical and up until July rarely considered ai worthwhile. Even when it had good ideas, it could never deliver.

    Then in July everything changed. I’m “vibe coding” despite myself, and so far it’s working. The difference is greenfield, common programming languages, common problems, much less code complexity. The long run is where we’ll see if we shoot ourselves, but there’s clearly characteristics where AI has more of a chance to succeed.

    Still far too cheap. In my company the cutoff is $200/month. If you want more, you have to brag ask over slack. So everyone knows who is using more, how many they are, and it’s a pretty’s small percentage

    That sounds like a lot , but not really, relative to a developer salary

  • We knew. We didn’t listen. Reagan was called “the great communicator” for a reason. I admit he had me fooled.

    But seriously, he was presidential and imposing, you could see practically feel the call to action when he said “Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall”. He was not embarrassing as the face of the us, he was not as blatant a liar, he didn’t pardon criminals, there were limits to the civil rights he trampled, and he had a platform other than enriching his buddies.

    Criticize Reagan all you want as the start of the downfall, and you’re probably right, but he was downright liberal compared to our current chaos

  • My company fixed even more bugs “with” ai during June. Because of AI project Glasswing and the fear of looking stupid, I was finally able to get priority for updating everything. All the tools, all the dependencies, all the programming languages are now on supported versions. Even the most legacy projects are now up to date. Tens of thousands of bugs fixed.

    Where’s that conviction when you gave up on EVs instead of trying to improve your own technology? Where have their ever been ford EVs that normal people could buy? What about those for employees eager to jump to new technology when you shut down their factories?

    And seriously, they’re competitive with Chinese cars in Europe because they resell Geelys (Chinese cars)? What kind of bs is that?

  • And we hear so much about the bad aspects of technology, but technology is a tool that can be used or abused, and it is moving fast. Think back ten years and even in that short a term technology has improved your life hugely

  • Get off the internet and pay attention to real life. Is this what “touch grass” means? Even politics used to be about reality but we’re in an age of internet politics that’s entirely toxic. Yes the internet can be toxic and we’d all be more healthy with less of it

    all of it could just go up in smoke tomorrow.

    It always could. The only difference is now you have people shouting on the internet about it and politicians who seem intent on causing it.

    But even in the places with the most toxic politics, it usually won’t. Even where the hatred spite and racism is the worse, the reality is your neighbors and commutative more impact.

  • Somewhere in between. A big part of my role is making processes better. I could spend the entire year as a top tier programmer then get shitted on in my review because “what larger initiative did you lead?” So I do the stuff. When someone has an idea I get it done. When I have an idea I get it done. But people are hard so usually I just get it done

    It can be frustrating at times - we just had all hands on deck response to a business emergency. 3 of 4 initiatives were things I started and worked my way through the teams to 80% done and counting, yet somehow it’s someone else’s idea and they didn’t even include me until I said “wtf?”
