  • Lemon? I’ve never seen a lemon on the edge of Mac-n-cheese, but it makes perfect sense and now I want one

  • That’s just because people get too close to the edge without proper safety equipment

  • Sometimes things are defined by history, inertia, earlier understandings. There are six continents, because there’s always been six and it would be overly pedantic to find objective criteria with today’s understanding …… unless you want another Pluto controversy.

  • Don’t forget zealandia being its own continent

  • What are you looking to change? Really the best we can hope for is stalemate. If democrats gain enough seats, cons won’t be able to pass more damaging bills nor rubberststamp donvict. Hopefully we’ll see resistance to donvicts evasion of constitutional checks and balances.

But given the partisan divide and dysfunctional Congress , without the white house and a filibuster-proof majority, there’s not much hope for starting the recovery

  • I especially hate this at work. I work with guys from the UK, about 5 hours ahead of me. Since we don’t interact half a day, I need to leave an update so they know where things are in their morning. However they keep thinking they need to respond.

If I’m leaving you a text at the end of my day, 10pm your time, I’m expecting you to act on it in the morning, dammit, and you’ll have half a day before I even notice. I’m not trying to take away your family time

  • I wish it hadn’t come to that … it ought to be more straightforward to roll back the clock, as MAGAts want to do. Roll back all those tax cuts for the wealthy. Roll back Supreme Court decisions letting them avoid taxes. Roll back letting corporate money dominate politics. Roll back union busting.

Income taxes used to be very progressive, in that wealthy people paid a much higher percentage. However now that ladder stops, the percentage stops rising, and ever more wealth and money accumulation can be defined as “not income”, so the wealthy pay the least in taxes (by percentage).

Rolling back these changes should help narrow the huge gap of income inequality, reduce corporate ownership of our government, and give ordinary people more of a voice

  • This is his chance to retcon the goal - by wrecking one of the biggest oil producing regions in the world, his owners can see even more profits as the us dominates oil production. It was “intentional”. /s

  • Whoosh

Edit: for those missing the point, this was directed at myself

Edit2: and one more try after another coffee, saying more of the words out loud since apparently I have no social skills this morning ……

/me, ducking in panic, as a thunderous whooshing noise fills the sky, as @Canadian_Cabinet@lemmy.ca kindly identifies the point sailing by just out of my reach

/me, red-faced with embarrassment, as @wesdym@mastodon.social kindly points out my word conveys unintended meaning to those of you not listening to my inner monologue

  • Could they have had an aversion to some spice? Indian foods are usually spiced more intensively and some can linger.

Even the smell of Indian people starts with a truth: garlic and other spices can linger on the skin and even be excreted from pores. My ex-father-in-law (not Indian) really had this problem with garlic. We all do to some extent, but he’d smell strongly of it for days

  • Make sure you know the price of sticker paper and whether you’re really saving any money.

I think canons been enshittified, but mines been solid for over a decade. I buy cheap third party ink, and the difference is big enough to save money even if it’s another cartridge per session. Realistically I haven’t printed anything in like two years

  • Either is fine.

I have to admit I can picture American units more intuitively, but that’s just what you’re used to and use all the time. I have no idea what my height in metric is but it’s easy enough to look up and I’d remember it if I had reason to use it.

I also like afflicting measurement puns on my British colleagues. They groan in pain and may not appreciate the humor, but I’m amused at carrying on weather smalltalk about 30° vs 30°

  • Why? I’m following the Reddit convention of replying before I watch the video, but even if you don’t have someone who can speak sign language,

    • a lot can be communicated by gestures and touch
    • surely the flight attendant has or can get an effing smartphone to type or translate

    Edit:

    • she noted on the ticket she was deaf; flight attendants shouldn’t be surprised

Even if that story is bs and the airline’s story about an open container is true

    • they’re not claiming she was visibly drunk
    • we’ve all done that - sucked down our drink so we don’t waste it, even if it’s just water, while complying with open container restrictions
    • reads like an excuse, especially with the detail about the gate agent

  • Not quite on topic, but I was never able to hate the situation with Werner von Braun. Space technology, both real and imagined, has always been an inspiration for me. It embodies the dream of aspiring to more and greater, can lift us humans above our roots as clever tool using animals. The science and technology is a great investment as it pulls every part of society forward toward a better future (and I know some of y’all will come to bad-mouth this, but se la vie).

Werner von Braun developed rockets for the nazis, and I believe was responsible for the V2s that caused death and destruction in the UK. And it’s a root that has developed in some of the worst of humanity. And the us government brought him over, let him avoid any prosecution, used his work and let him build on it. But the us civilian space program brought us the dream, the challenge, the inspiration with his help. I am fine with that.

My feelings on the situation are pretty much inline with his treatment in “For All Mankind” and I even feel somewhat sad for him.

  • Yes, I have to admit a lot of the red pill dreck is entertaining in a mean-spirited way. And yes, political muck-raking and conspiracy theories as well. It satisfies some primal part of me I barely understand, and then I get back to reality

As is a lot of ai slop media, if you count that as immoral. It’s usually some space opera, romance or petty revenge fantasy written at middle school level, but I can watch a half hour escapist video that satisfies something in me.

Clearly “professional” media is partly to blame. I still try to stay objectively informed but the ongoing death of journalism makes that harder every day. In my chill out time I try to mind movies and tv shows to entertain me, but cable and streaming companies make it more painful every day." It’s really not worth it.

Certainly I am as well, filling up on the addictive sugar-laced snack foods of media, letting my attention span fade, and immersing myself in some twisted version of reality that can’t be good for anyone’s mental health. But I’m just saying the “healthy snacks” are priced out of reach and getting less and less shelf space

  • As long as there’s no budget, he gets to say “see, government is a swamp”, and convince all too many to vote against their legislators to “drain the swamp” (ie redirect the blame), and convince all too many it’s ok for him to act without regard to constitutional checks and balances

  • I’m still expecting it to be enforced only against people who “look like” undocumented immigrants

  • The scary part is that it already is becoming apparent in our day to day. The problem is accelerating

  • Huh, bit of a tangent, but I wonder what the plural of metropolis is? Metropolises? Metropoli?

    Edit: metropolises
