  • Huh, I thought the SpaceX part of SpaceX was profitable. We all know the goal of Starlink was to jumpstart a satellite market that required Starship, plus pay for it, but I assumed profit in the regular launching business plus government development contracts

  • I do. She wasn’t just the only candidate who was not an evil egocentric conman, but would have continued policies for the long term improvement in the country.

    My biggest complaint against Biden policies was this country is too schizophrenic for policies that build over a long term. Another 4 years might have gotten the ball rolling enough so they couldn’t be turned back. Meanwhile back in the real world, most were canceled after spending huge amounts of money but before we could see any benefit

    That’s a great idea that would be a great complement to a wealth tax, but not something the mayor of one city can do much about. Bezos should take thing to his representatives in Congress!

    That being said, it would be instructive to see how close we’re already getting to this. Whoever passed the changes to the huge personal exemption probably did a lot for both simplifying taxes for most people and helping a lot more pay zero. Even republicans deserve credit if it was them - I assume it was because of the cap (until this year) in state and local tax exemption meant this was paid for mainly by middle class in high cost of living states (largely Democrat)

  • Isn’t that the important part of the story? Effing Texas regulators didn’t detect Strontium (or other pollutants the factory didn’t mention) so didn’t test for it?

    We’re so used to the idea that companies will do the least they are mandated to, but isn’t that why we have regulators? If I get a new water heater I’m required to have an inspector sign off and his job is to flag anything that is off. Why can’t a multibillion dollar industrial facility be held to the same standard?

  • I think we’re all being misled by “mining”: it’s difficult to imagine how having to return something from space will ever be competitive with mining the same thing on earth, regardless of unobtanium.

    What mining in space is good for is …. Space economy. And the goal is not to mine things that have value on earth but those that have value in space. For the foreseeable future, the goal of mining in space would be to reduce the cost of the space economy by reducing launches of bulky, heavy, or consumables. Think of all the rocket fuel spent on rocket fuel, water, food, oxygen, construction materials and shielding. Thats much higher cost than just carrying the people. Think of how much cheaper a manned space mission can be if you can instead use what is at your destination. Cutting the required number of launches in half is cutting the costs in half

  • Seriously agree. In reality the changes are marginal. If my charging stop is 15 minutes instead of 20, that’s nice, but it’s a small enough difference to no longer be a decision factor.

    It’s much more important to have more chargers at more locations

  • Even if we were to establish a permanent largish base, they would be specialists only. It will always be expensive to get there and it’s always a long term stay in an expensive habitat with strict rules that someone has to pay for.

    While I like the realism of The Expanse, I just don’t see the existence of a non-terrestrial lower class or even middle class: what could they possibly due to pay for any possible living costs. I do hope we’ll develop permanent bases throughout the solar system but it will be a few specialists and lots of robotics. Nothing else makes sense

  • No one ever wants to hear that. They complain about EVs being so much heavier, doing so much more damage to the road …..

    But don’t like hearing that road wear varies to the fourth power of axle weight so all cars are essentially the same and insignificant compared to trucks.

    And especially don’t like hearing that I completely agree on varying by weight, for both fairness and that my EV is much lighter than their effing full sized pickup truck

  • I’d go with junk food generically. While some of it has to do with changing tastes as I get older, most junk food has gotten so bad that it’s not even tempting. Now ice cream is trying to join that mess, but there are still a few brands worth enjoying.

    On the other hand, Trader Joe’s dark chocolate peanut butter cups are truly amazing, in a way Reese’s could never even dream

  • We do NOT want an electric car tax, but it would be fair to treat EVs fairly, especially if it goes toward transportation infrastructure fairly.

    Some of the problems with current funding

    • gas tax is insufficient. If we truly want to cover transportation infrastructure, we need to double or triple
    • gas tax is unfair, even before we get to EVs. A more efficient vehicle does not need less infrastructure spending
    • goes toward roads, almost exclusively, new projects almost entirely. I know maintenance is boring but it needs to be done, and should be what we need to solve the problem, not just default to road
    • most transportation options have been starved of funding for a century. We need to fix that. We need choices. We need more scalable support, both up and down
