  • It is, that’s what motivates my kids.

    So a big problem is lack of control. If schools provide electronics they want it to be cheap, zero maintenance, and limited to academic work to the extent possible.

    Kids want their control, they want their features and options, and yes they want to do other things. But not every kid can afford a laptop, not every kid can keep their laptop in working condition, and not every kid will focus on schoolwork as much as they need to

    My kids are in college now, and the electric is requirement is “bring your laptop”

  • I don’t think there’s a clean standard for gerrymandering. There’s only more gerrymandering or less gerrymandering, and it’s a subjective court decision when it’s gone too far

  • Maybe. The real answer is we can’t define true general artificial intelligence. We have no idea what it would require or how we could do it.

    We’ve actually gone through several waves of AI. Machine learning, neural nets, expert systems, voice recognition were all considered AI, before LLMs. But each time, the end result is “nope, that’s not general ai”. Each time we refine our understanding of what a general ai would be. Each time we get a little closer to even understanding the goal, but we still don’t know where that goal is

    Currently drinking a “Maine sour”: blueberry and cinnamon. My local brewery is influenced by the cuisine of the Indian owners and really leans into sour ales and tropical fruits!

    But yeah, even though I like an IPA most of the time, what about everything else? I’ve actually had good luck finding dark/black ales this year but it seems like no one makes Marzens anymore. October is disappointing without Marzens. What’s up with that?

    Edit: Jimmy Carter was the US President who signed into law deregulating beer. Since then we were legally able to start brewing our own, and it jumped-started the rise of craft brews here

  • Yes but remember there is not currently much that needs that large of a rocket, and you get diminishing returns on rideshare. Major satellites are still likely to need private launches and there’s no point in buying a bigger launching you need.

    Large rockets are currently needed

    • for space stations - a handful of times total
    • manned missions to moon/mars, a few times
    • a constellation like Starlink can take more advantage of rideshare

    Current space economy has a use for maybe half a dozen launches per year. All that money developing re-use, building multiple launches per sites, a lot of the basic technology, is a waste, if that’s all we need.

    Making back that excessive development cost, achieving that low launch price, entirely depends on there being sufficient market to launch many times per year. It’ll be revolutionary for sure, but only if

    They’ve designed and built for scale, which will be amazing when it happens, but only if we scale dramatically.

  • Maybe, but this was NOT just raising the minimum wage. This was raising the minimum wage for fast food workers of large franchises. They deliberately distorted the job market and at least some of those negatives are because of that.

    The question is what goal were they intending by distorting the job market and was that achieved?

  • “Were”? So what’s the argument against raising the minimum wage again, now that the federal minimum is still stagnating and all the states that increased theirs are dropping behind again ?

    I have to admit that what my teens are earning at part time jobs seem so much higher than what I earned as a kid …. After decades of inflation, and there’s no way an independent adult could support themselves

    Edit after RTFA: I never knew anyone who thought a $15 minimum wage was crazy as an idea: everyone focussed on doubling there’s minimum wage as a crisis. The obvious solution is to schedule a regular increment so we are never faced with that again. Unfortunate reality is waiting an other decade then have everyone scream over doubling yet again.

    Realistically most/all states phased it in over years, so this was never a real concern. Perhaps there’s a messaging issue here

    I fully agreed they have completely screwed up broadband rollout while spending $100B of our money. But that doesn’t mean an Elon monopoly is a better choice. Let Starlink compete as one of the choices but make sure there are choices

  • But it goes both ways. Starship is about jump starting a much larger space economy, but it also requires a much larger space economy.

    Falcon 9 is sufficient for today’s space economy. It already carries 80% by mass of the worlds launches. As the economy gradually grows, it’s easy to see it increment to keep pace, or other companies/countries growing into bigger shares. In this world, starship is a waste of time and money.

    But if we get that paradigm shift, suddenly starship is at the center
