  • The reposts and memes often get more upvotes than the OC, :(

  • Ignore the downvotes.... i agree we need a separate community for pics of community members' cats, vs. reposts from grandma's facebook page....

  • When 90s punk hit the mainstream it found its way into suburbia, where, like gangster rap, people singing about inner city violence were now talking to white picket fence kids who’d by and large never seen such violence.

    i feel personally attacked lol

Thank you for your long form deep dive... i think your points about the machismo make sense and lack of emotional maturity really hits home for me

The jocks and preppies that popped in a tourists were still assholes, and going to a show where you’d expect the crowd to be welcoming based off the band’s message

definitely saw the jocks and rich kids but overall i never felt unwelcomed at shows... and in hindsight, we shouldnt be judging them as tourists and assholes... we all just immature kids looking for a place to belong.

A lot to digest. Thanks again

  • and it’s been a fairly white, male dominated scene

It's weird to me that such a progressive movement has not progressed much in this regard...

Been going to shows since the early 90s and as a visible minority, i still stick out like a sore thumb at punk shows in 2026

and to be clear i'm not accusing anyone of racism or whatever. Clearly the music promotes anti-racism, anti-facism, etc... so what is it about the scene that makes it so unappealing to some of the marginalized groups that the scene seeks to defend? It's baffled me for years

  • Why gratis and not libre?

or does anon not know the difference between free and free?

  • Webrings as well?

  • Project manager. (i can hear you all rolling your eyes, and i agree with you....)

  • Where can i follow these new, young, whippersnappers?

    lemmy communities? Mastodon accounts?

  • Yes... since as long as i've been listening to punk rock in the early 90s, it seems like nothing has changed.... maybe even gotten worse.

As a youth punk rock made me hopeful. Gave me the sense that other people saw the same problems and writing songs and expressing displeasure.... 30+ years later, i feel like we havent made much progress in our class struggle. The DIY ethic of the 90s seems to be gone. I'm still going to shows with 55 year old dudes singing about their high school girlfriends, lol...

  • Propagandhi's lyrics are depressingly accurate in 2026... and much of it was written more than 20 years ago

My favourite is "and we thought that nation states were a bad idea"...(thats the long-ass song title)

  • Pretty late... there was a linux request on the gog forum almost 10 years ago. I gave up on gog shortly after their negative response to the idea of a linux client

  • Ideologically, gog is the winner for me.... EXCEPT they refuse to have a native linux client, so i stick with steam

  • Gpu vram is so scarce and precious. Why spend it on something as common as swap space? I skied the github and it mentions latency benefits over swapping to ssd.... but still

  • I have a white coworker who goes to the states almost every weekend to visit family... probably low risk since they're white...

    Here's where is gets wild:

My manager is a muslim, clearly visibly middle eastern. Goes to NYC for meeting twice a month.

My friend is pakistani, muslim, middle name is mohammed right there in his passport. Goes to lots of midwest states for meetings at least once a month

Neither on has had any problems at the border and they tell me that my apprehensions about travel to the US are blown out of proportion....

I still wont go down there, but i hope for their sakes that they are right.

so basically 3/3 people i know who travel regularly to the states have no problems... clearly ymmv.

Low probability of incident, but very serious consequences if it happens

  • Removed linux off all the computers in my house because i found out the passwd file can store full names and phone numbers! Then the admin can even use something called finger to show this information!!

  • When i was a kid, soft drink cans were 280mL or something like that. Then we got the 355mL cans. Product inflation. I think its the only thing i can think of that's never been shrinkflated.

Now they have the smaller cans for portion control reasons, but they still havent shrinkflated the normal cans
