  • I'm a dev. I develop little prototypes and things with Rust. I often create a new repository and don't give the project a name, until I've coded enough of it that I know where it's going.

A few years back, the makers of the programming language Rust started punishing people for prepending rust- before the names of their tools and apps. They recommended that people append -rs to the end.

The combination of these two things caused me to end up with a whole bunch of repositories named something like cli-rs or clitool-rs, both of which I'd just pronounce as clitoris.

  • Ah yes, the vegetables and sports git merging strategies. I personally prefer rebase myself, but that's okay.

  • Friday night HD 137010 b run boys, who is in?

  • Yep and I also want to add that you can use compose.yml to limit the CPU and RAM utilisation of each container, which can help in some cases.

  • You're doing i right. Playing cool games with your kids sounds like a blast and some great memories :)

  • DDD is great until you need a houseboat.

  • I agree, but don't let it distract you from how much capitalism sucks balls comrade

  • I'm not trying to give up as well, just want to reduce it. I did try a four week break from it (made it to 2 weeks) and it did reduce the amount of time I spent on it from that point forward. So I might have to do another one of those.

  • What part of all this is toxic? Who said I don't have hedonistic tendencies?

I watch porn. I just waste several hours a week on it. Trust me, I'm going to keep watching porn. I just want to timeblock it a little better, improving my relationship with it.

Maintaining this kind of lifestyle will likely result in burnout sooner or later.

Which ones exactly do you think contribute to burnout? Because as I read through it, I can't think of a single one that does. Maybe journaling if you do it every single day (I don't).

  • Yes, I get lab burnout. I do not want to be fiddling with stuff after my day job. You should give yourself a break and do something else after hours, my dude.

    BUT

I do not miss GUIs. Containers are a massive win in terms because they are declarative, reproducible, and can be version controlled.

  • Docker in and of itself is not the problem here, from my understanding. You can and should trim the container down.

Also it's not a "whole nested computer", like a virtual machine. It's only everything above the kernel, because it shares its kernel with the host. This makes them pretty lightweight.

It's sometimes even sometimes useful to run Rust or C++ code in a Docker container, for portability, provided you of course do it right. For Rust, it typically requires multiple build steps to bring the container size down.

Basically, the people making these Docker containers suck donkey balls.

Containers are great. They're a huge win in terms of portability, reproducibility, and security.

  • This doesn't necessarily mean they're not being impartial.

If a side's position is the truth, they're going to support impartiality, because they want the truth to be spread, which supports their side.

TikTok is probably about to start moderating heavily in favour of a pro-Israel/anti-Palestine bias, just like other Western social media platforms. It's possible that all a startup would have to do is not do this to secure funding from Palestinian investors.

My only question is whether they'll allow progressive types on their platform long-term.

  • Elucidate, thanks?

  • Things that helped;

    • Blocking Lemmy and Reddit on my phone, and limiting time browsing the News
    • Delete social media apps from the phone
    • Switching from diet sodas to just cold water
    • Reducing coffee from 4 a day to 0-1 a day
    • Get diagnosed for ADHD and get on Vyvanse
    • Eat high fibre, starting the day with oats/fibre
    • Meditating
    • Journaling, with weekly review of how I progressed towards my goals
    • Cutting back on smoking weed to once every other month

    What I'm still working on;

    • Cut down on time browsing porn. I'll probably binge porn for an afternoon once a week or two. Still too much.
    • Consistency in the gym. I've had a lot of life altering events happen recently, so I'm trying to get back on the ball.
    • Just vegging out on the computer while at home. I should be doing things like writing, reading, or exercise. But instead I sit here and type out long comments while my meds kick in. :)
  • Expound, please?

  • If we were talking about stuff like healthcare, food, housing, electricity, clean water, public transit, or access to information, I’d be on the same page.

But this is a luxury hobby. And with luxury hobbies, there’s usually some flexibility. You don’t need a high-end PC to play games. You can run plenty on a lower-end setup, try different genres, or even step away from PC gaming altogether.

You could have friends over for a tabletop game, go for a run, hit the gym, or try something like rock climbing. There are lots of ways to spend your time without needing top-tier gear
