  • Well, it depends on what they want. There are different platforms in the fediverse that work very differently. Mastodon and Lemmy/PieFed can interact with each other, but it's always painful. For Lemmy/PieFed I'd recommend they look for an instance that has a local feed that fits their interests. Ideally an instance that is federated with most large instances, otherwise it gets a little too boring.

  • A lot of K-pop has English lyrics. Some more than others.

Not just K-pop. Take a look at the songs at Eurovision for example, it's mostly English lyrics. Having English lyrics is very popular with a lot of european musicians to the point that you can't even find certain genres in other languages. Someone recommend me some French or Korean shoegaze please.

  • Your discord account is older than discord? How did you do that?

  • Wouldn't mind being a teenager again. Ok, maybe not these days, but in general.

  • Looks more like the Babadook.

  • I remember the time when Linux was stuck at 2.6.x.x, then came Linux for Workgroups 3.11.

  • Event Horizon is the one where spacecraft lost in some warp experiment reappears. But the spacecraft in Sphere was also human and from the future. Should definitely rewatch both.

  • I'm not even sure how I would store the answers to these questions in a database. Would you hash them like passwords or just store them in plain text (maybe encrypt them, but if someone has access to your servers they can probably access the encryption key too)?

  • If you store it in your password manager alongside your password, what's even the point in having these questions?

  • 저도 가락 씨를 사랑해요.

  • Does it have cup holders?

  • It's not necessarily about transistors/mm^2, there is also power consumption and clock frequency. Back in the mid-2000's clock frequencies stopped just under 4GHz and then went down for a few years before going back up to way past 4GHz in the last ten years or so.

  • GlobalFoundries is still in Dresden, but the smallest process they have there is 12nm. They're just not at the forefront anymore and focus on other market segments.

  • TSMC is building in Europe too, specifically in Dresden, Germany, but it's afaik a 20nm fab mostly for automotive chips.

  • If I'm not entirely mistaken there is still some basis to the nanometre number, it just doesn't refer to the actual smallest feature size or gate pitch anymore. Basically in the mid-2000 Dennard scaling stopped working and ever since the nanometre numbers are "made up". Dennard scaling was how most progress was made by just shrinking transistors. But that doesn't mean just because Dennard scaling doesn't work anymore there is no progress, it's just harder to achieve. So the semiconductor manufacturers just continued naming their fabrication methods as if Dennard scaling still worked. So basically a modern "3nm" process is equivalent in some way to what would theoretically be possible if you had an actual 3nm process.

  • For social media an important point is inertia/network effects combined with marketing. And I think a lot of open source/decentralised advocates are not good at marketing, while at the same time network effects can't kick in due to lack of content. Because ultimately most people don't care about it being open source or decentralised, most people care about content. If your favourite youtuber is not on peertube, then why use peertube. If your favourite celebrity is not on mastodon/pixelfed/loops then why use those. If there is no community for your favourite sportsball team on lemmy/piefed why join those platforms?

  • For now it seems to be mostly very "fediverse".

  • The plane one is a bit tougher.

    Gliders/sailplanes should be reasonably accessible.
