I can't do smart examples at half past three, so here's this. If you were a medieval serf and the king had assumed direct mind control over your horse, you would have no difficulty seeing how that was an offense against the social contract and a clear signal that the divine right of kings was flawed. "My horse has been mind-controlled by the court sorcerer, now he won't breed with the family mare... and yesterday I swear I saw him whispering to a guard!"
You'd just about tolerate that weird shit from a horse the king gifted you, but not your own. But this isn't the age of horse. Good night!
I had one like that, but managed to get promoted to equal standing so she's no longer a direct threat. After nearly a decade of subtler sabotage, the company was sold to a competing firm when my boss retired, and one of their admins who had worked with her bad-mouthed her to hell and back but sang my praises. They had to keep her to do the shitty overcomplicated stuff nobody else wants to learn how to do, but at least now I don't have to talk to her and I'm doing okay at the new place.

I have snarked him about it, myself. I have no objection to overtly affected personal expression (no hypocrite I). It's just that reading a thorn unexpectedly feels like stubbing my toe, but in my brain.
I mean yeah. Using FPTP from the outset of the US and then making zero rules about how parties have to govern themselves internally could have been the fatal flaw; FPTP always seems to lead to a bipolar/duopolistic state, and whenever there's enough money that's going to lead to a good cop/bad cop scenario.
The thing is, there isn't supposed to be such a thing as a default candidate. We're supposed to have a primary race where candidates come out of nowhere and try to make the case for their platform. It's been a while since Americans got that luxury.
