  • Thanks for doing the legwork on this, I probably wouldn't have found out why, otherwise.

    On second inspection, all of my news communities are blocked. This list is ideologically all over the place, makes me think these blocks are based on personal vendettas as much as politics.

  • I used tesh very rarely, only to ban users across all my communities and only in extreme cases, until recently when it just stopped working for me. Now I know why.

    The communities aren't far left or right, one is just general news that's about 50% science articles and the other is for independent Canadian news. This kind of censorship is as infuriating as it is bizarre.

    I'm arguing that brown countries are over stigmatized as backwards when it comes to women's rights, when white countries aren't as progressive as people would like to believe, and we still have a long way to go.

  • Where do you live that the legal process isn't corrupt and biased? Besides, it isn't a matter of choosing between bad and worse. The only reason any system has progressed is through recognizing the faults and pushing, sometimes violently, for change.

    This is especially important because, as we've seen in the U.S, we can lose rights much more easily than gaining them.

    Just one of the bullshit things we did:

    Canada has a policy where lumber companies have to plant enough trees to replace, factoring in natural death, all the trees they log. However, some species of tree are worth more money than others. So they cut down diverse forests to plant one, maybe two species: pine and spruce.

    Thing is, there are pine beetles and there are spruce beetles that kill the trees by burrowing holes through the bark. They suddenly had a whole lot more of their favorite trees so there were suddenly a whole lot more beetles. Big sections of forests died at once with the beetles then so overpopulated they spread to healthier, more diverse sections of the forest to kill the pine and spruce there, too.

    You can guess what happens to a forest full of dead wood.

There was a time in the white, western world, that my grandmother remembers, where she wasn't allowed to have a credit card without a husband or father to co-sign.

  • As a Canadian in the middle of these wildfires, which fire marshalls and environmental scientists have been warning about for years, I'm glad Doug Ford is getting chastised by his big buddy over a problem that should weigh heavily on his shoulders.

    And yes, please, set a precedent to start treating the air as a shared resource. I can't wait to see what kind of penalties get levied against the US once we make that a thing.

    I know he'll forget the whole thing once he starts sundowning tonight, but a girl can dream.

  • It's such a pervasive observable reality in comedy I'm struggling not to just say "watch a comedian." Really, any comedian.

    Recently, we could go with John Mulaney's performance about his drug use and rehab experience, something he continues to reference in his new series. There's James Acaster who's done entire shows that mix absurdism and heavy sarcasm with self deprecation. Patton Oswart did a fairly famous bit on him and his daughter dealing with the death of his wife. Pete Davidson's performances are about his drug use and lack of self respect.

    The entire show Seinfield and every character in it. Curb Your Enthusiasm which is about the creator of Seinfield, who made the show inspired by himself, his lack of boundaries and social awareness. The show Barry is 200% dark humor.

    I could go on, but I'd be naming most comedies and comedians.

  • The best tip I ever learned was the twenty minute rule.

    It's daunting to think about carrying a task to completion, but very easy to commit twenty minutes to dishes, cleaning the bathroom, gardening, drawing, whatever. You can get a lot done in an hour by working at different things twenty minutes at a time.
