  • For your edit, you don’t want the direction of shear forces right along the layer lines. This is less pretty but will be much stronger for the intended purpose.

  • American dishwashers run very hot and use harsh detergents. Some dishes and cookware will state on their packing or even on themselves that they are not dishwasher safe.

    Despite this, the sheer convenience of the dishwasher will make people ignore the warnings, and the objects retain their basic functionality just often enough that the meme can be an open-ended YOLO-like joke, phrased like parental encouragement, instead of merely mocking people who try it.

  • Ahhh, that makes some amount of sense. Jasmine is a breath of fresh air, and one way or another I do think we'll be hearing from her for a long time, but yeah, "hopium" is probably the right notion for this run.

  • Why is this here? Crockett is one of the loudest voices on the left in Texas, and along with James Talarico the closest thing to rising stars we have here.

    Crockett has come under fire from Republican members of Congress because of her often terse criticisms of President Donald Trump. Earlier this month, she called the president an "old white nepo baby" and a bully.

  • I saw Master and Commnder at 10fps on a 2" screen because I managed to get video working on the iRiver H320 I got because even 5(?) years later I was still part of the generation of nerds who thought iPods were just "No wireless. Less space than a nomad. Lame."

  • This one is way below $100, but about ten years ago I bought a roll of twist tie wire at a dollar store. It's fifty or a hundred feet, with a little guillotine cutter. It's still just a bunch of twist tie, but it punches WAY above its weight with quality of life improvement. No more hunting for the one you dropped, or wondering how you'll close up a veggie bag. Also good for (fairly light) pictures that use wire instead of sawtooth hardware, and I've used it in a pinch when I didn't have cable ties. I dunno. It's just an oddly useful substance to have lying in your junk drawer.

  • I haven't really thought about anything remotely in spitting distance of sim racing since I was playing XBox One Forza games (mostly the Horizon one that is set in the Riviera-ish region) with a Thrustmaster TMX (I think?) clamped to a Home Depot Fliptop table.

    This looks really cool. May I assume the Moza drive unit was the priciest component?

    I'm sure it's this. Everything about this, down to the variable delays that different customers endure, screams out that this is a shady, shoestring operation stalling until they finally hit minimum order quantity with their drop-shipper in China.

  • I absolutely adore my kiddo and find meaning in my role as a dad that I did in very few other things I've done in life.

    That said, it definitely does change your life in a way where you will not be able to prioritize the things that are just for you anymore. I am both deeply happy to have become a parent and simultaneously very glad that my wife and I waited and got our finances in order and traveled and lived our life as a couple for almost a decade before we decided to be parents. For parents whose story wasn't quite as deliberate, I can imagine a lot of conflicting feelings.

  • In my estimation, its biggest fans, often (but not always) folks who are also Discovery's loudest detractors, overpraise it. It was made by a TNG superfan to let him be a TNG captain acting out TNG scripts with TNG production values and TNG acting, and -- for good or ill -- with his particular sensibilities about what makes doing so fun. It definitely gets much better than the first couple of episodes, once they'd successfully tricked Fox into thinking it was a full-on Galaxy Quest spoof, and overall I enjoy it, but it has its issues.
