  • Alternatively, you can remove the battery and have the laptop plugged into a charger 24/7. I did that a while ago for my laptop server and it's been working great. I need to watch to not move the carpet it stands on (on a separate stand) too much since the connection is a little flimsy, but I've not had to deal with random shutdowns because of that at all yet.

  • Thanks for the detailed write-up and the "Qobuz" link - hadn't heard of that before. Looking forward to them adding API access so I can add the site as an app to my server more easily.

    Also I imagine it's really cool to have that, literal, physical connection to your music. Makes it more tangible and more substantial since you curate what you listen to more so than just via downloads.

    I'll think about what I'll do with my CDs!

    In my case, I just have the CDs in a shelf and don't ever touch them anymore which is kinda sad. Been thinking about getting a disc drive to digitise the CDs and put the music on my server, but I can get music digitally anyway, so what's the point is what I'm thinking.

    A disc man sounds cool in theory, but in practise I'm not sure I'd like the hassle of changing CDs and using wired headphones. How long did it take you to adjust?

  • Do you just collect the CDs or do you also play them with a CD player? I feel like it's not even worth the hassle of getting a system set up to play CDs compared to a record player because the quality won't be as good.

    I've got a good couple dozen of CDs I bought over the years when I hadn't used Spotify yet - moved to self-hosting now - and I was always wondering if I should work on actually playing CDs instead of just burning them

  • I'm probably an unsuitable person to ask this since my TV is basically a glorified monitor, but from what I could tell there are no downsides except for the obvious one being that I can't update my TV. But considering much bloat and spying is going on with (LG) smart TVs, I don't mind it all.

    I use Twitch, YouTube, and Jellyfin on mine, and it's been awesome. I hadn't used any other functionality or apps the TV comes with before rooting and I likely won't in the future. So even if some of them didn't work, I couldn't care less.

    Maybe do some research and find out for your specific model?

  • Check out rootmy.tv to jailbreak your LG smart TV. Depending on the model and firmware, there could be additional steps you need to take, but in my case, since I still had the stock firmware installed, it was just a single slide of a button on the TV's web browser.

  • There's a website called rootmy.tv that can help you find or execute roots right off the TV's web browser. When I bought the TV, I hadn't connected it to the Internet a single time, so it still had the stock firmware. I could just type in the URL and click a single button - that's it. Depending on the firmware, model and brand, this could look different for you. Also I'm not sure if this only works for LG TVs - might have to do some research to find a suitable method for yours.

    That also sounds very practical. I'd love to get into Pis sometime, but the RAM fiasco is making them quite expensive for my current budget, sadly.

  • Same! I jailbroke mine and can watch YouTube and Twitch ad-free, and it's got Jellyfin on the homebrew channel, so I can access my server off my TV :)

  • That was basically the case for most GameStops in Germany before they closed down for good nationally a couple years ago. You still had your games, of course, but like 80% of the customers we had came for merch. Funkos, shirts, other memorabilia.

  • Probably depends on where you worked at, but at GameStop we did have a lot in the back and upstairs too where we had a single office. Behind the register in the backroom, we had a small TV to connect consoles to and try them out when we bought from customers, a bunch of shelves with duplicate games we didn't have any space for upstairs as well as a shelf for upcoming games that were not out yet/preorders for customers.

    Upstairs was the office were probably like a billion copies of Red Dead 2, various CoDs, and Fifa lived, our stash of new consoles, and one giant room full of old promotional material that was never distributed.

    The only other retailer I worked at was kind of a gift shop I'd call it? Like a shop where you can buy all kinds of seasonal crap, but primarily candles, decorations, party games. And there we'd also not have anything "in the back" to materialise product from.
