Not really. I use the exit node to forward my “default” traffic through the VPN but I still use tunnels between my end devices too. My wife uses it to print documents from work and hell, I even shut off a lot of services on my LAN and made them Tailscale-only just as a way to force encryption (unnecessarily).
I do some pretty crazy stuff honestly because I’m really into privacy. Since I’m stuck using a VPS I usually put it in the same country that I’m currently in so that for my end devices it appears I’m just accessing some corporate VPN.
On the VPN I actually have two in-country double hop VPN tunnels. I then have two more double hop VPN tunnels that first go into some random country, then finally to Switzerland (because I love their privacy laws). Those two tunnels are set as two equal cost multipath hops for my Tailscale clients, then they get stuffed into the first set of in-country tunnels.
Iinject random delays to protect against timing attacks too, and on top of all that I run Blocky with an insane amount of blocklists and that traffic also spread between all the tunnels over DoT.
It’s a lot of overkill but I absolutely love having no ads, strong data protection and a higher level of freedom of speech.
I’m not familiar with NordVPN Meshnet but I wanted to chime in that you can use Tailscale with a VPN, but you’ll have to do some routing work between the Tailscale network interface and the VPN one. I do this on a VPS.
One day our Linux servers were hosed at work because the Windows server hosting them got all fucked up during Cloudstrike. I’ll never understand why you’d host Linux on Windows rather than the other way around.
It’s very rough coming back after 20+ years. Easy things on Linux quickly become a wasted day going down six trillion rabbit holes on Windows before you can even accomplish your seemingly simple task. Most problems in Windows are much more easily resolved by booting into Linux to make the repairs.
I’ve worked at McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, and Taco John’s and out of all of them McDonald’s has the most efficient systems. As long as management follows the policies it should be easy to run a McDonald’s. Keep in mind this means a lot of stuff is prepared ahead of time: tomatoes, onions, etc. are pre-sliced before it ever reaches the store (Burger King and Wendy’s are more “fresh” in this regard.)
Wendy’s was pretty good too, but Burger King had the worst setup I’ve seen. The restaurants are just not set up for efficiency and it doesn’t take much to start having long wait times.
If you’ve got Tailscale it’ll build WireGuard tunnels directly over the LAN: I actually do this with Samba for Time Machine backups on macOS.
Obviously the big bonus is being able to do the same over the internet without the gaping security holes.
(I used to use split DNS so that my LAN’s router’s DNS server returned the LAN IP, and Tailscale’s DNS server returned the Tailscale IP. But because I’m a privacy geek I decided to make it Tailscale-only.)
Not related to music steaming but I’ll just throw in that Infuse is an awesome iOS, macOS, tvOS app for streaming movies from a Samba (or a multitude of other) servers.
Don’t walk in the middle of the “aisle” (the part cars drive down) in parking lots. I don’t forget it because I constantly see people (morons) not following this advice and almost getting hit by cars.
Is Ruby on Rails known for crashing often? I’ve been a developer for something like 15 years and don’t understand the backend portion of this meme. Am I missing something?
