  • Soooooo... which is going to ultimately turn out to be more effective way of detecting guns: AI systems, or dowsing? Both are gonna suck, be wholly inadequate for the purpose, and be giant wastes of public money - but obviously, but I've gonna admit, AI at least as mild possibility of being better than random chance. In optimal conditions. Maybe.

    (You may be thinking "pfffft, surely people wouldn't be stupid enough use dowsing rods to detect weapons, that's just so clearly stupid", but they did, and this "solution" was sold to them by slick conmen. ...Sounds familiarrrr????)

    Random Linux nerds who were bullied. BULLIED, I say. When we coded our personal sites on Netscape on Linux (which was painful enough when Netscape 4 had a hazy understanding of CSS1/2 already) and the site had some random glitches on IE from time when we couldn't ensure IE compatibility.

    This "IE6" shit needs to stay buried, OK? This is "history that must never repeat" shit, OK? OK. Good.

    BONUS JOKE:

    There was a whole range of jokes dedicated to what happens when you shoot yourself on foot with your favourite programming language.

    (Yeah, the PC works great, only problem is that it defaults to VGA output and will only switch to DP after several seconds, which means I never see the rad GRUB screen. So far, mostly used this PC to rip my CD collection to FLAC, because it has a DVD drive.)

  • My own small problem I have with Codeberg is that while they allow private repositories for open source projects that are not in a presentable state yet, I, um, have a lot of projects that fit the description. Being an ADHD scatterbrain and all. I keep blowing dust off of years old projects and then they keep languishing.

    GitHub doesn't care, put up as many private repos you want.

    Some people might say "well, why not make the crappy repos public, then" - well I could, but it's not good for my mental state.

    However, I now run a private Forgejo instance so I have a good alternative for GitHub in that regard. (I also don't get dependabot spam along the lines of "this barely working hack from 10 years ago has had critical updates to its dependencies!")

  • Yup, it was fully known as IBM PS/2, for "Personal System 2". IBM wasn't happy about how the original PC system got cloned to hell and back, so they designed a more proprietary and patentable system. Suffice to say it was a massive failure, what with it being incompatible with basically all of third party hardware. But the keyboard and mouse ports were widely regarded as a good idea! (and probably not as patentable)

    I started writing a clock app of my own because the Windows 11 clock app didn't have a proper analog mode and it's pretty useless. (Windows 3 clock app had analog mode, why not Windows 11?)

    Some time ago I was ranting that instead of adding an analog mode, Microsoft will probably just pointlessly add Copilot to the clock app.

    ...Don't blame me! I was just pointing out the obvious direction Microsoft is going for, whether we like it or not!

    Aaaaanyway. This summer's project is to figure out how the hell the Godot layout system works so I can make the layout responsive and I can release 1.1.

  • A while ago, there was a a YouTube video of people laughing at AI generated floorplans.

    Because of course there was a company that tried to make an AI floorplan generator without a shred of thinking. They posted the "good" ones on their website, and even they had obvious weird details like completely misproportionate rooms, having ten bathrooms in a small house, and just straight up missing doors everywhere.

  • All of the Steam soundtracks I've bought came in MP3 format, some also in FLAC for good measure. Can't download it over web though, have to download them with the Steam client. Some games have bonus content that is just slapped in the game folder as MP3s or whatever.

    Bonus soundtracks in GOG are also DRM free (of course) and downloadable over web.

  • Funny thing is, I bought the Harry Potter ebooks back when they were only available through Pottermore. Last time I checked, you couldn't actually download them through the website anymore. Which is funny because the site only allowed 7 downloads or someshit. (I think that I failed to download one file, that counted as one download anyway, and the queer idea of "fuck this greedy hag" started to percolate in my mind.) How many downloads did I need? One. Thankfully in the unlikely event I need to access this shit, it's sitting in my Calibre library. Where it has been sitting ever since.
