  • That must have been so good. I saw Emo Philips at a comedy club a few years ago without knowing who he was. I don't go to many comedy shows, but that was definitely the best one I've seen. Probably even moreso because I had no idea what he was like. :D

  • Paul McCartney at a music festival in 2013. I know that part of it was just being starstruck by him, but also, it really was an amazing show. I was also as close as you could get without being in the VIP section. He was like, right in front of me.

    Cirque du Soleil performances are way up there, too.

  • I'm curious about whose website this is. Does this person make one-off informational pages? This security.html page has one style, then there's popular_self_hosting_services.html with a different style, and the homepage with a classic, basic HTML style.

    I haven't read the article yet -- I can't say if it's good info or bad info. But it's nice to know something about who's writing it when it comes to this kind of thing.

  • I love those! My mom still uses the one that her mother used. It's close to 100 years old now.

    I have a more modern one, it's an aluminum cylinder with the crank on top. Still a nice morning ritual, and much easier to hold.

  • "Prisoner's Awakening," from the Dead Cells soundtrack, which frequently comes up on my workday playlist. Definitely recommended, that game has an amazing soundtrack. Instrumental, varying from orchestra and acoustic guitar to sometimes electric guitar and synth (or, synth-like?) tracks.

  • A mistake in the article: ghostty is not "nearly two decades" old. It's like two years old. I think the author saw that the ghostty developer had been on github for that long, and assumed that the ghostty project had been going the whole time.

    It's great to see popular projects moving to alternatives.

  • Two great blogs I've found through Mastodon:

    Both blogs have an RSS feed, and they post on Mastodon when a new article is up. Those two have accounted for almost everything I've bought on Bandcamp recently. Mastodon in general, and the #bandcampfriday hashtag, are great sources.

    I also started buying physical media lately. Lemme tell ya, the guy behind the counter at the record store knows everything. EVERYTHING. All bands. Who toured with whom. He is the human scrobbler. Get to know him.

  • A play called Souvenir, late last year, put on by a local theater company. (Incidentally, their theater is in the building that used to be the gym when I was in college. It looks really nice inside now, and you would never guess that it was the most divey, stanky gym you had ever seen for like 60 years beforehand. I loved that place.)

    Anyway, the play was about a famously bad singer who gained fame for how off-pitch she was. It was funny, heartwarming, and very well done. I didn't know it while watching the play, but she was a real person, too. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florence_Foster_Jenkins

    I think it's mostly focused on comic strips in the newspaper, but I'm guessing the process is mostly the same for comic books.

  • I'm always torn about what kinds of features should be put behind a paywall. Like, if it's just little customizations, that's much better than saying, "pay us a monthly fee to make more people see your posts." It seems silly to make UI customization a pro feature, but that also seems like a non-evil way of monetizing a social media app.
