I wouldn't put Devuan to a "other random distro" list, and I didn't heard much bad about it either. But I also wasn't much into it like you do with your research and providing documentation to achieve that yourself. I personally would probably go Devuan, if I was Debian user and the only thing I would want to change is getting rid of systemd. Unless my further investigation and research finds reasons not to (I did not read anything convincing yet).
And by all means, if someone wants to do it themselves, go for it. You even provide a tutorial / documentation to achieve that. I appreciate and respect that a lot.
Wouldn't it make more sense to directly use Devuan distribution instead ripping out and replacing systemd from Debian? Users would have a whole community for support, and dedicated developers and maintainers to keep the system work optimally without systemd, while maintaining what Debian makes great.
Off course for study and learning how to get rid of systemd is a great exercise.
"liberated" sounds like SystemD is a jail for your system. If that is such of a high value to you not to use SystemD, maybe its time for you to change the distribution maybe? There are dedicated distributions with the alternatives to SystemD in mind, tested carefully and operating optimally. Devuan, AniX and MX Linux are based on Debian. If you are not sure, then its best to leave it run. My "assumption" would be that it is safe to cancel during the download period. I am actually not familiar how Linux Mint GUI operates, as I am using the upgrade and update commands on an Archlinux* system in the terminal. So I can see exactly what it is doing, and when it enters into installation phase after downloading all necessary packages. During installation I wouldn't cancel the process. My suggestion was for you to look into.
Better run a terminal command, which you can execute a command right after the job is done. Something like upgrade && shutdown (off course you need to fill the full command). If you can, I would stop the upgrade process in the GUI and run it as a command instead for full control. Next time you just run the command.

It always starts like this. I criticized the initial optional and ai features in Firefox. People said "oh its just this one time in the PDF" and so on. What happened? Mozilla added more and more Ai functionality, to a point where they had to integrate a kill switch because so many were bothered by. Also even if you disable all the features, it affects you in some way. Because now they will not integrate an alternative feature without the need of Ai. That means if you disable Ai, you miss out on features otherwise. And it takes lot of resources and development time from the team for stuff you don't care.
Therefore I do not accept the defense of "it is optional, it does not affect you" for these various reasons I just outlined.
When I say you need Epic Games launcher, then I don't mean you have to install it yourself. Usually these launchers (like Ubisoft or Rockstar) are installing it in the background and require additional resources. As said I'm not sure if this is true for the Steam version here too. If you don't play on Linux, then you didn't have the Linux issues then I guess. That was my main complaint, as the they took away the native Linux version and made it for months or longer unplayable for me. And that was a time when I had a lot of fun before Epic ruined it for me. If it worked for you the whole time, then good for you.
No offense, but did you not read what I wrote? Edit: Sorry, that was rude by me. They had removed the game in the past from Steam and the Linux support. I think years later they added Linux support again, but I already moved on. While we seem to be able to play through Steam, the Epic Games Launcher still runs in the background and an Epic account is needed too (I think, is that true?). And no one can purchase it on Steam anymore.
They give you lot of reasons to. For me it was a personal thing when I really started to hate Epic Games. 2019 Epic purchased the studio of Rocket League, when the game was in a hype phase and I played and enjoyed it very much on my Linux system. Shortly after they removed the Linux support for the game and then they also removed it from Steam as well. Due to an update of the game it was no longer viable to support it on Linux they said.
This really really bugged me on a personal level. Today I think the game is playable on Linux, I don't know exactly. But it requires Epic Games Launcher and probably account on them. To me the game is dead. And Epic killed it (for me).
Note Xfce 1 and 2 aren't listed here, because apparently there was no distribution using them as the default? If you know any, please post here, I'm curious. According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xfce the first version came out 1997 and started as a Linux version of the (then) proprietary Common Desktop Environment (CDE) from UNIX. So original Xfce predates KDE and GNOME about a year or so. Interesting fact.
Ai is bad enough. It should only be used by people who can program, understand the code and are willing to debug it and make it good before any public release or questions. Vibe coding, not knowing what you did and how this works, then asking everyone else to help you is not the way to go. In example I don't like seeing rm -rf $VAR to delete temporary directories based on a single variable without checking in place and making sure its safe to use this command. Do not run this code if you can't verify and understand every line of it!
My advice is, starting from scratch, making an effort to learn coding and slowly build a much more simple approach. This way you will understand the code and for future efforts, can use Ai to assist you building what you want.

That's the point, there is no need for test if you trust the Ai. I could keep joking, but nobody would know if I'm serious or doing jokes and would get downvotes. And that would be unacceptable. :D

I will still use the AUR, BTW. But I'm definitely no longer in auto pilot mode, which was a bad habit to begin with. But this cannot go well for me forever.

Edit: According to this posting, you can also sort with
F10key? Try to highlight / select with the mouse the lines and use that key.
