  • Anything that keeps a clear record of what people say or believe in, without that changing based on someone's mood on a particular day is going to be a flop on that side of the spectrum.

  • The design seems to be to prevent a single person going rogue and doing whatever. Not designed for when someone has won elections and start damaging the country.

All the nonsense of "Republic is not a democracy because democracy is mob rule and not good for minorities" seems to no longer work.

  • I agree. I was just mentioning that what they think not only didn't make sense but rather becomes mathematically impossible in some cases unless the countries are taking huge losses.

  • I think it actually can't work that way at all if he does that. Theoretically, it'll work upto 100% tarrifs but it's way worse.

Imagine mr T says 100% tarrifs on product X, that costs $20.

If consumers pay it then it just costs $40 and it's over. If the original country pays it then they have to pay $20 to sell $20 product, which is not profitable at all. But if they jack the price to $40, then they have to pay $40, again not profitable. So this system only works for smaller % tarrifs so that they can raise the price to cover that.

Suppose you have $2 profit (10%) on $20 item, and 20% ($4) tariffs. You can't pay more than your profit, so you increase the price from 20 to 26, now you have 30% ($8) profit, you pay 20% ($5) tarrifs and get total 10% profit. So you see with 20% tariff you get 30% increase in cost. So this would work worse than consumers directly paying 20% tariffs.

  • Well you don't know people with PhD that don't tell you they have one

  • Of course we'd rather it stays pest free. For if you have black mold, would you stay there and have health consequences for rest of your life, your children and all. Or would you just think I'll abandon this, it's gonna cost a lot to give up the furniture and everything that you have build up over the years but it's not important than your life. Specifically as a non-white person where even your residence status isn't protecting you anymore.

And this current thing isn't the problem it's a symptom of a problem so deep, I don't really see us getting back to normal anytime soon. We might mitigate it, or maybe it'll get so bad people will realize the actual problems and work towards solving it. I just don't have energy to be that optimistic. I really wish people would be more empathetic, think about the community and be altruistic enough to address the bigger problem. But I don't see that happening.

  • You can just remove anything marked nsfw through the filter. It works for all instances

  • Considering they adapt to tesla. A problem I see is them removing any need to have a common infrastructure to support all electrical vehicles. And just have charging stations and such that only work with tesla. So people are semi forced to buy it because government made infrastructure for it and other electric car companies can't use that and can't build all that for their cars. Don't be that optimistic when they are literally there only for their benefits

  • Yup simlink is so nice. I sometimes use it for color vs monocrome plots. Change simlink and compile. Although I learned you can also use if statements in latex, I use that now.

  • Yup. When I rerun my things, in latex I just overwrite the plots file (pdf/png) and compile latex. In word I have to find where it was and replace it there. It's way easier on latex if you make your code just write plot files in the same location.

  • It's in rust. Problem is the gtk part, it has to be installed in the system, which makes it run there. But how do I distribute the program without having everyone install gtk on their computer. In Linux it's just a dependency so it's not a problem, for windows I can't seem to make it work.

Edit: also, I need gtk because people around me who uses windows aren't going to use CLI program at all.

  • And the ease with which you can generate hundreds of lines of page with a simple text template and code.

  • I'd like to make it like that for my projects, but I don't use windows so I can't do well with packaging them. And sometimes when I try it runs in the computer, but then doesn't run in other computers because of missing dlls or some other things.

Anyone have good idea how to make it easy. Using windows VM is such a hassle to install and such just for tiny programs I make.

  • Extra note on this. NWS's agenda also includes educating people about weather and climate and other things. Our engineering class about rainfall and such basically is in chaos right now because the person from NWS teaching it is no longer working there. So this will have long impact for future generations. Specifically since our engineering department already is very tiny compared to other departments.

  • If god is real and benevolent. If god is real and is letting current situation in the world, then I don't think we can make assumptions on they being any good for us.

  • Looks like the same problem with bunny and carrots. Telebi lied to us again.

  • The leading theory over this seems to be they're trying to invalidate a bunch of international/national agreements about the gulf of Mexico because now "that doesn't exist", or is not about this gulf that has a different name so definitely not the one from agreement. And of course there's also things about doing everything at once and getting people distracted by these while sneaking in harmful policies.

  • That's why I keep saying banning a word or making a world "not professional" doesn't do anything as long as people's though doesn't change. Like saying "don't say black, say african American" doesn't make them suddenly like them, they'll still be racist. Changing words will just make them use a new word to mean the same thing.

Yeah there might be emotional things about certain words and not wanting people to use it can be understandable. It might be a step is a direction if it's to be less humiliating or be inclusive. But just saying "don't use this word, use this word instead" will make the new word mean the same thing with same derogatory meaning if people use the new word derogatorily. Now DEI has become that new word, and instead of claiming the word back, owning it, people might go "don't say DEI" and come up with a completely new acronym while trying to "heal" from the past administration.

  • I see the dev don't want recommendation algorithm. All good to avoid the recommendation bubble, but a category/tags might be nice instead of random everything.
