  • You are correct, thanks. Defederation does block users from an instance, but user-level instance blocks on Lemmy do not (though PieFed apparently has a separate user-level user block).

    Content on a community on a remote instance only shows up when browsing All on a home instance if at least one user on that home instance has subscribed to that community. So it could just be that there are more dedicated furry pornography aficionados on lemmy.world, users who are doing a determined job of seeking out and subscribing to furry pornography communities.

    The user you're responding to, @SpikesOtherDog@ani.social, is complaining about too much sexy anime clogging his feed up. He has ani.social as his home instance, which is an instance dedicated to anime. So he's going to see all of the anime posted to ani.social when browsing All, since it's local content, stuff in communities on ani.social, not remote.

  • Yeah, I just don't think that trying to view everything posted to the Threadiverse and blacklisting what one doesn't want to see is really something that will scale.

    Like, imagine viewing a combined feed of every Web page that someone puts up anywhere on the Web. That's got a lot more volume than the Threadiverse does in 2026. The signal-to-noise ratio is just going to be unworkable.

    Maybe someday, someone will build a recommendation system that profiles users and tries to suggest what they want, but I'm pretty bearish on the prospect of individually-curated killfiles. It didn't scale on Usenet and that had clients with more-powerful blacklisting functionality than do Threadiverse clients in 2026.

    I really think that as of 2026, the most-scalable route is whitelisting what one does want to see. Find communities that have content that one is interested in, subscribe to those, browse Subscribed.

    Yeah, I don't know if I'd get it myself with where RAM and NVMe prices are presently. But that sort of thing is presently about the cheapest way to get a ton of memory connected to a GPU.

    Yeah, I know. And prices aren't likely gonna promptly crash to the money-losing 2024/2025 rates, either, since there's pent-up demand. But, just saying that my guess is that there's going to be substantial near-term depreciation on any AI hardware purchased right now.

  • How bad is it to trigger the overdraw protection in the PSU? Obviously my PC would shut down immediately (with all that entails), but would I risk damage to components?

    I suppose theoretically low voltage could damage something, but I doubt that it's very likely.

    I'd probably favor getting the PSU, because otherwise, if you hit any stability issue, you're going to be thinking "is it the PSU"? But I wouldn't be too worried about component damage.

    I'm set on the 7900XTX, as I want the 24GB VRAM. It's quite literally the cheapest option (new, in my region) that is also a usable gaming card.

    Note that if you're wanting local AI compute capacity --- the likely reason to want a lot of VRAM attached to a GPU other than gaming --- and you can live with less memory bandwidth and a substantial price bump isn't an issue (which it sounds like it is, but just throwing this out there), you might also consider a unified memory computer, like a Framework Desktop, as that can take a lot more memory than a consumer GPU. I have a 24 GB XT 7900 XTX and a 128 GB Framework Desktop, and I've found myself using the latter rather than the former, especially for LLM stuff.

    If you're willing to wait until 2028, my expectation is also that memory prices will be better and thus bang-for-buck on local AI compute will also be better. Also give the hardware guys time to iterate on hardware; probably improve performance.

  • I assume that you'd have some sort of massive workload that you span over multiple plans. You just have software to switch you from one plan to the next once you saturate the plan.

    Probably not all that hard to write some kind of software that tries to make massive use of LLMs. Like, oh, I don't know. Getting all abstract here, any problem in computer science where you have a problem that you don't know how to solve directly, but you can easily check whether an answer is correct. Then you just keep trying to solve it, and repeatedly check whether the generated answer is correct or not.

    Another possibility is that you have a problem where you can quickly check the quality of a given solution (either via human assistance or software, even though you don't know how to solve the problem yourself), and want to generate a number of solutions and pick the best.

    I've certainly seen that with image-generating diffusion models, rather than LLMs --- stuff like "batch-generate me N images using this prompt, and I'll pick the best". It's an algorithmically-simple, brute-force way of improving quality, by just throwing more compute time at the problem. The human "quality evaluation" is cheap to do compared to the human time required to generate an image. Burns a lot of compute time, but the alternative to improve quality is improving the model, and if we don't know how to do that yet...shrugs

  • Whether they do that or not, I know that they have (or have had in the past) deals where they explicitly provide discounted tickets where you basically have "bottom priority" to get a seat on a flights, and you only get notified whether there's space for you with a limited number of hours notice. IIRC it's targeted at retirees, who have a flexible schedule and may favor inexpensive travel.

For example, Claude Max 20x costs $200 a month, but maximizing it would cost $8,000 a month in token spend, while ChatGPT Pro 20x, which is also $200 monthly, has a maximum possible spend of around $14,000.

    Ehhh...yeah, but that alone isn't necessarily an issue. There are plenty of services that exist that rely on consumers, in aggregate, not maximizing resource usage. Residential ISPs normally oversell their service. That works because the typical user only uses a tiny fraction of their sustained maximum rate of bandwidth consumption. In theory, if a lot of users started fully saturating their lines all the time, ISPs could shift everyone to metered service, but it works well enough and enough people value not having to worry about metering more than paying the minimum per-byte cost, so the system functions.

    I would guess that as long as you're willing to pay them more to cover travel, you can probably convince a company further away to do it. Can't hurt to try, at any rate.

  • As long as you have paging space --- and you almost certainly do --- in general, an OS should page out pages of memory used by software that isn't being frequently used.

    It's possible that the program is allocating memory and then keeps hammering it to keep it resident, but most of the time, a program allocating more memory than it absolutely requires isn't honestly that big a deal, because the OS will handle it reasonably and just leave it in the pagefile.

    I don't know what the mechanism is to report this on Windows, but you might try looking in mmc (Windows-R mmc Enter), if that's still a thing in Windows 11, as it has a bunch of process resource usage graphs.

    On Linux, you'll probably want to be looking at RSS to find what's actually in physical memory (well, there can be shared memory and some other things, but RSS is probably a reasonably approximation). You can see this in top.

    It looks like there is pretty decent multistory parking garage coverage in Manhattan. It's just not free --- it's actually pretty pricy, as parking garage rates go --- and the street parking is. Unless there are zoning restrictions preventing construction of more of it, though I mean...that's probably just part of driving in a very-high-density city.
