Off-and-on trying out an account over at @tal@oleo.cafe due to scraping bots bogging down lemmy.today to the point of near-unusability.

  • If you're doing mini-ITX as opposed to the more-common ATX, it's presumably for a reason. You might want to list a rationale, since it'd help people make suggestions, as there are different reasons someone might want to go down that path.

    Like, a while back, I was looking into doing a mini-ITX build because I wanted a machine that I could lug around as a laptop alternative. For that, being small in volume (even relative to typical mini-ITX systems) and durable is important.

    A different person might want a cheaper case. Or just to use less desk space.

    Any thoughts on keeping it quiet, since this will be next to my TV?

    I looked into this a while back. Very quiet builds are kinda restrictive (especially for gaming systems).

    You may have luck just putting it in a (ventilated in the rear) cabinet. Maybe stick some sound-absorbent foam on the inside.

    Or just move the PC elsewhere, if you can run an HDMI cable to your TV and a USB cable for input devices into the room. You can get (pricy, stiffer) cables with more shielding, or (also pricy) ones with fiber optic cable inside and a transceiver at each end that permit for much-longer-than-normal cable runs, if you can't manage it with regular cables.

  • Investment provides resource allocation, which is not something that just happens on its own. That is, it says "this company or project is a worthwhile project to allocate capital to, and this is not". The money here was also not invented out of ether, but rather lost by investors who shifted capital to SpaceX earlier, and gained by those who tried to shift capital away from SpaceX earlier; other investors came to agree with those shifting capital away. Those who do so earlier are rewarded; this encourages earlier efficient movement of capital.

    Resource allocation is a necessary part of economic activity; any economic system will require such a thing to be done. You could have your government do it instead of investors, as in a command economy. Countries generally don't do that, because it has run into more serious problems of misallocation.

    I've definitely locked up my brakes on a BMX with a pedal brake many times. I remember, as a kid, going down a hill and trying to see who could leave the longest skid mark at the bottom. I was never thrown off the bike. It just ate up some tire.

    Butler told authorities he had passed out at the wheel. But security camera footage obtained by the NTSB told a different story, and showed the car accelerating through an intersection before leaving the road entirely. Police also found that Butler’s phone had Google searches including the terms “Tesla FSD not aggressive enough 2026” and “Tesla FSD too timid,” raising serious questions about how he was using the system before the crash. Butler has since been charged with manslaughter. The victim’s family has filed a lawsuit against both Butler and Tesla, alleging negligence.

  • AI seems mental, though, unless Python is just some glue for calling functions or libraries that are implemented in lower-level languages, which is definitely also a thing.

    Most of the work is done by parallel compute hardware on most systems, not the CPU running Python.

    I've steered clear of MOBA's so far because I've read that they hold just about the most abusive and elitist bunch of players in gaming. Still, I have the itch to try one.  Is there a MOBA out there that will let an old fart with iffy reflexes play without getting skinned alive by his teammates?  Especially as a noob?  One where the players don't take shit as seriously as if they were fighting for the very fate of Middle Earth?

    There is no such thing as non abusive moba. When you are forced in group with 4 other random people against other 5 random people an argument is bound to start be it inside your team or from the enemy. Always expect to be trash talked in a moba no matter which one.

    My first couple of attempts in MOBAs reminded me of when I tried UO...take one step outside Britain and get slaughtered and called every name in the book...TO me this format draws the most elitist jerks in the industry.

    I don't think you could pick a worse genre when it comes to douchenozzles.

    Random MOBA groups are always going to be abusive.

    I played a DotA 2 mutiplayer game myself. Once.

    And I note that as of this writing, the only two people to list a video game in their comments have listed MOBAs (DotA 2 and League of Legends).
