The Lemmy Web UI converts a double hyphen to an en-dash and a triple to an em-dash when displaying text. However, not all clients do this. I'm viewing this in Eternity, and it leaves the hyphens intact.
This conversion happens when viewing the comment, rather than writing it.
Smartphone cameras are almost certainly the largest source of photography in society today, and those things default to doing all kinds of automatic processing on the images they take.
It does rather make one suspect that a number of people haven't read a great deal of properly-written English.

End of the day, if it's in the cloud instead of local --- and this applies for pretty much any service, not just LLM models --- you're relying on trust in the service provider (as well as anyone who might buy them, and trust that they are able to secure their network against people who might break into it).

But as the memory shortage ends, I expect you'll have more people running LLMs locally. Still be more-expensive from a hardware standpoint than cloud computation, though.
Right --- that's why I'm talking about a PMU and serial device server linked to a serial console and BIOS as an alternative. That's another way to accomplish that.

You can mount an ISO image through the BMC and boot the server from there.

Hmm. I don't really understand what the major benefit is to having an integrated management system over just providing a BIOS that can expose its interface on a serial port and having a serial device server attached to the thing, which then means that you aren't tied to a particular management system. I'd also kinda think that it'd be cheaper to use a serial device server if you have a ton of servers in a rack that need to be managed, since one serial port server can handle all of them. Use a smart PMU for power control.

There's still the tort, but the way The Mirror described it, he was "fined", and I think that you only get fined in criminal law, not civil law (in civil law, the analog would be called paying punitive damages, at least here in the US).
Eh, this one's fixable, because you only have a few sources of legit imagery, and it's all contemporary and digital. Just have Google Earth render the image server-side and add a cryptographic signature to any legit satellite images that someone saves.
You can have AI-generated satellite imagery and image-is-proof satellite images coexisting. Can't do that for most images, but for this particular niche, you can.
I think that it's fine technically --- the ML family of languages have extensive static typing functionality that I like --- but Rust has enough overlap in functionality and has greater uptake. (I say this not having spent enough time to really come up to speed on Rust myself.) A quarter century back, ocaml was the language that I was most impressed with for strong static typing functionality. In 2026, I think I'd probably look at Rust and only go to ocaml if Rust doesn't suit your needs.
As to whether it can be a "daily driver"...I mean, you can use any language daily. I do think that it's hard to appreciate how helpful it is to have all the examples and library support and tools until you move from a popular language to a less-used one and suddenly discover that you want something that isn't there.
So can you use it? Sure. Is it the first option I'd recommend to someone who --- and I assume that this is why you're looking at it, if your alternative is Python --- wants to move to a statically-typed language? No. Is it a terrible choice? No, it'd also be a long way from the bottom of the list that I'd recommend.
Honestly, GNU/Linux isn't better today from a user standpoint. I mean, Linux has the technical subsystems to sandbox software, yes --- like, the move to Wayland makes isolating graphical software possible, where X11 imposed major limitations on one's ability to do that. Various containerizing systems exist. But the typical software package distributed via Steam, say, in 2026, can see the filesystem as a whole.
Like, I can hack something up with something like
firejailusing that functionality that may-or-may-not work for a given game on a given system, but that's not a real, universal solution for users. My mother is not going to do that.Mobile OSes at least isolate most apps from most of the filesystem and some sensors, and provide some level of reasonably-accessible transparency into what apps can do. They still have their own issues that annoy me, like software normally being able to phone home with what information it does get. But that's still way more isolation than a user who is playing a video game on GNU/Linux is getting.
Global, always-generally-available connectivity brought us a lot of nice things, but it's also come with a lot of not-so-great things, and some of the not-so-great things is a loss of privacy and a loss of control over the things that we own. :-(
I mean, that's really true of products in general.
I think that there are some real consumer law issues to answer where someone buys a product and then a manufacturer can control the product subsequent to the purchase. Like, say I buy a BMW with the expectation that I am not going to be seeing ads, based on the way it acts at the time that I bought it. At that point, I'm locked into owning that BMW. Then the manufacturer degrades my experience, maybe to the point where I no longer consider the vehicle to be the one I wanted.
Like, what is my remedy here? If the vehicle has OTA updates, I can never know what it's going to be doing down the line, so I can't make an informed decision. Having informed consumers is one of the basic requirements for markets to be efficient.
Maybe I could say "Well, that's just a case of let the buyer beware. We'll rely on reputation...some auto manufacturers will piss off consumers and those will be avoided". But...if someone doesn't buy cars that frequently, that's a long iteration cycle.
I'm actually more concerned about video games. Like, if I'm a publisher, once I sell a video game, I don't normally have more revenue coming in from it. But if I do have the ability to update that video game down the line. And I can update it to go harvesting user data, which turns it into a revenue stream. A lot of video game publishers go defunct on a regular basis or sell IP or whatnot, so there, even the "rely on reputation" route is more questionable.

Search engines build an index periodically by looking at what's on a website. That's what provides your search results. They aren't informed if a web server removes or moves content, though eventually, they'll have a bot that checks, notices the change, and updates the index.
They --- well, Google, and I assume most --- will update major sites more frequently, so this is probably more common if you're pulling something off a small, backwater website.

EDIT: I'd also be pretty confident, though the article doesn't talk about it, that California won't normally have jurisdiction for California state law unless a data broker is doing business in California, and that that will also be a constraining factor. Like, if a data broker company is only doing business in, say, Russia, the US will not enforce rulings against them regarding California state law in general.

I personally would much rather have a PC, given a choice between having one or the other. When I have had both in the past, I have always wound up with a console that's gathering dust.
However, that depends on what you're doing with it and what you want. Consoles have their own strong points:
- Less setup/troubleshooting/maintenance.
- Because the platform is locked down, harder for other players to cheat in multiplayer competitive online games. The PC is open.
- Everyone has more-or-less the same hardware, which is typically desirable for 3D multiplayer competitive video games. No "get a more expensive and powerful video card to get a slight edge".
- There is basically one standard controller, so games in the game library are more likely to support the features of your controller (assuming, of course, that you're using a controller on the PC).
- Some platform-exclusive games (and obviously that cuts both ways, and the PC library is much larger, but if you very specially want some of the PS5 exclusives, you need a PS5 to do it).
They can't make competitive dedicated memory in a near-term timeframe --- the kind of timeframe that would matter, if they are to get something in during the shortage --- and Cook has explicitly said that Apple will not try.
However, they do make their own CPUs, and they could maybe make a large-onboard-cache version, kind of akin to what AMD has been doing. That'd make the CPU more amenable to use of slower memory for most applications, which might open up more memory options.
I don't know about a whole farm, but I suppose that the plant that I'd most personally be likely to grow would be some sort of hot peppers.

Not a lot of work, and nice fresh in small quantities --- so having some growing there is nice. Plus, it's something where a grocery store is only gonna have a limited selection of options relative to what's out there.
Whether that's a good choice is gonna depend on climate where one lives.

If I didn't personally have to take care of them, probably a variety of fruit trees, grapes, berries, maybe squash. Dad planted stuff around the back yard when I was a kid planned so that there was always something edible out there year-round. Grafted stuff on there too, so you had plumcots on one of the apricot trees, a peach tree that was half yellow and half white, a bunch of types of apples and plums (IIRC seven types on one tree) and so forth. It was neat from a consuming standpoint, but I wouldn't personally want to deal with caring for each. If you enjoy the hobby, though...shrugs More fun than just having a ton of one thing. Not optimal from a cash crop standpoint, though.
EDIT: Oh, strawberries. Not that they're hard to find, but store-bought strawberries are really watery, as they're sold by weight or something like that. If you've ever had strawberries that aren't as heavily watered, like, wild strawberries, it's a neat experience. Much stronger flavor.
