  • I only found out about our county trying to sneak a data center in after the plan had already been withdrawn. They were working on all of it in closed meetings but fortunately some folks found out and when they brought it out in the open where the community would see, it quickly disappeared. Now we're all on watch for when they try this shit again.

  • Pvc is relatively cheap. Submersible pump could be as cheap as $10. Expanded clay is also affordable. Not sure about the design, though.

  • I've only been to the Saint Louis ren faire but I hear from friends that have been to both StL and Kansas City, MO ren faires that the KC one is bigger and better. StL's was vastly improved by moving from August to October. August + river valley at the confluence of several large rivers = swamp boil.

  • As a former flight attendant I can attest to this. If people knew how often their pilots used the cockpit O2 to cure hangovers there would be a lot less people comfortable with flying. At least in the US, that is. I can't speak for other countries.

  • Growing up my neighbors were both deaf from birth and they were able to talk well enough for a child to understand without problems. I was friends with their son and a few times went with their family to gatherings at their friends' houses where the vast majority of attendees were also deaf.

    I haven't thought about this for a lomg long time and now I need to reflect on how that helped shape me into the person I became.

    I regret not learning ASL from them when I probably could have.

  • Mostly southern but definitely prisons as well. Predominant in chain gang type situations. An example more people might be familiar with would be Morgan Freeman's line "bathroom break, boss?" in Shawshank Redemption when he's been paroled and working at the grocery store. Yes, it's from a movie but it's also a reverence more likely to resonate. Shawshank takes place in the Northeast, hence prison...uh, "culture".
