I think they're bad for the economy. Money has to circulate. Every time a billionaire throws another million on the pile, they make things worse for everyone else.
For measuring brief periods of time, it could be how long it takes bubbles to reach a particular height from the sources. I'm sure it would be a bit different at each depth/pressure, so you'd need to take that into account.
