  • I'd say it's proper cooking if you're making decisions about what goes into it. Heating up beans and bread? Not cooking. Heating up beans and bread, adding some thyme and black pepper to the beans in the process? Cooking. Very simple cooking, but cooking all the same.

  • Birds.

One morning I got up and found an explosion of feathers in the entry. I mentally said goodbye to the owner and decided it must be the smallest cat - because there was no sign of the bird and she eats everything.

Imagine my surprise when I went to put my shoe on and there was something soft and warm under my foot. There was a still-living, apparently unharmed, sparrow hiding in my sneaker. I released it outside and went on my way.

Not the most pleasant experience, but I'm luckier than my mother-in-law who found one of these in her shoe. They bite when they feel threatened - that's how she found it.

  • That I need a healthier hobby.

  • Another reason to do it (in my area): you want to pay a fine for illegal car conversion!

  • I tried a Budweiser once. Once was enough.

  • And the author should be syphilitic and working in a drafty garret, at the very least.

  • You could, but I wouldn't buy it. I want art that someone sweated, swore and agonised over.

  • They were WWII novels, so nothing scholarly.

  • I did. My point is that this productivity tool hurts your productivity until you tinker with it to make it less annoying.

  • Sighing (a lot) and reminding myself that every time the 29th rolls around I get a three-day weekend.

  • I've never been able to tell.

  • At least in my work instance, by default it sends me an alert any time someone posts a reaction emoji in one of the dozen chat channels.

  • There's a space station sim from 2001 that I still play because I love it so much: Startopia. I'd like Startopia 2 to be pretty much the same as the original (including graphics) but with higher-poly models and better scripting tools for modders.

  • For-profit social media, certainly. I don't trust it anymore. Astroturfing, data-harvesting, I feel like they're all made to fuck us over in some way.

  • What's that symbol on the shirt? Kinda looks like a Batman-shaped UFO tractor-beaming a cow.

  • As a bookish child, I made weekly trips to the library. To get to the kids section I had to pass the large print shelf, and there was one book that was always there: The Spitting Image. The gargoyle on the cover scared me! But when I finally looked him straight in the eye I found that he was trying to look furious, but came across as a little goofy. That's the way I imagine myself, too.

  • Moments I have truly known I was alive:

    • Using the restroom after chopping chillies but before washing my hands
    • Hearing my boss say "Can I talk to you in my office...?"
    • Seeing the jerk who swerved around me doing three times the speed limit get stopped by a cop
    • Playing with a kitten I had just adopted
  • I've watched anti-Nazi TV, read anti-Nazi books and sung along to anti-Nazi songs. But I think my all-time favourite has to be Surf Nazis Must Die.
