  • One more thing - check your cable. If I'm remembering correctly it's the high frequency electrical noise generated by USB 3.0 ports that causes the problem. USB 2.0 cables block those frequencies so the dongles will work.

  • Avoid TP-Link wifi bulbs. The ones I bought reboot again and again if their constant reports to China are blocked. TP-LInk and their employees do not need to know when I'm home and when I'm on vacation.

    I replaced them with inexpensive Thirdreality Zigbee bulbs and they have worked perfectly for over a year.

    The mafia creates a health insurance company that boost profits by immediately refusing to pay 1/3 of legitimate claims and this causes the deaths and suffering of hundreds of thousands of people. They make the red tape so egregious that very, very few of these people can successfully get their valid claims paid.

    The mafia is making massive amounts of unearned profits but they can make more, so they pay off government representatives to make sure there are no meaningful penalties for refusing to pay claims and any fines imposed are way less than the profits made. The mafia makes billions of dollars paid for by the deaths and suffering of those who bought their insurance.

    Replace "mafia" with "shareholders" or "corporate executives"and it is exactly the system we have now. It is rightly called organized crime (even without the government involvement), despite the corporate brainwashing.

    There was a movie made about this practice. It's called "The Rainmaker".

  • In the US we have a type of organized crime run by health insurance companies.

    Corporations like United Healthcare charge huge monthly premiums then consistently refuse up to 30% of valid claims. They make the appeals process so difficult and time consuming most people never successfully appeal a denial. These companies routinely murder thousands of people each year for money, but since they pay off our lawmakers there are zero repercussions and they're free to continue their murderous activities year after year.

    The only difference between this and any other type of organized crime is the profits are legal due to those payoffs, and in part thanks to Citizen's United and our crooked SCOTUS justices.

  • I did this using a router to handle traffic for about a year between sites 240 miles apart. The only downside was it used a lot of bandwidth. Maybe it can be done with some IP cameras, but I expect they'd be expensive commercial models. OpenWRT compatible routers can be dirt cheap.

    If your MIL's router supports OpenWRT or you can replace it with one that does, you can use a VPN and PBR (Policy Based Routing) to your home router or server and do exactly what you want with any camera that supports RSTP (Real Time Streaming Protocol). That includes most cheap wired TP-Link cameras and plenty of others. PBR on the router at your MIL's home would be used to route all traffic from camera IP addresses to your server.

    I used Frigate software and Home Assistant for occupancy detection/alerts and Wireguard for transport. It worked perfectly but I eventually got around to adding 2nd server.
